New Jersey - Apply for Probationary Driving License

There are three options to complete the program:

  • The Early Bird Road
  • The Young Adult Road
  • The Adult Road
The early bird roadEdit

Second Phase of getting Basic Driving License is Probationary Driving License
After getting Students learners permit and finished supervised driving practice which is minimum of six months. Have to apply for Probationary driving license

  • Visit an MVC Agency
  • Pass MVC'sroad test
  • Bring the 6 point Id Verification documents
  • Then have to undergo for practice unsupervised driving for minimum period of one year

In Unsupervised driving practice have follow the requirements and restrictions as given below:

  • You must observe the following requirements and restrictions while driving with a probationary (formerly provisional) license:
  • Display areflectorized decalon each license plate (front/back); decals available at motor vehicle agencies, $4 per pair
  • No driving after 11:01 p.m. and before 5:00 a.m.
  • Parent(s), guardian(s) or dependant(s) are allowed as passengers. A dependant is a permit or probationary driver's child, not siblings
  • Only one additional passenger is allowed unless accompanied by a parent or guardian
  • You can't use cell phones, hand held video games or any other hands-free interactive, wireless communication device
  • Seat belts must be worn at all times
  • SeeGDL Exemptionsfor hours-related exemptions for employment or religious reasons
The young adult roadEdit

For drivers age 17 or older, MVC offers a three-phase process:

  • Examination permit
  • Probationary license (minimum one year of restricted but unsupervised driving)
  • Basic driver license (must be 18 years old)
The following is the procedureEdit

Get an examination permit (not a student permit)
Visit an MVC Agency (may also be distributed by a licensed driving instructor).

  • Pass theknowledge test. You can study by readingMVC's Driver Manual
  • Pass thevision test
  • Pass the6 Point ID Verification
  • Pay fee
  • Permits are valid for two years and must be carried when operating a vehicle
  • If your permit islost or stolen, you must request a duplicate permit
Practice supervised driving for at least six monthsEdit

You must observe the following restrictions during the supervised driving phase:

  • Display areflectorized decalon each license plate (front/back); decals available at motor vehicle agencies, $4 per pair

New Jersey offers a graduated driving license program to first-time drivers. This graduated license is divided into categories according to the new driver's age: Early Bird Road, Young Adult, and Adult. Each category starts with getting a permit, which we'll cover in detail here. To get a basic driving license, First have to get student learners permit and Supervised driving period for six months. The next phase is to get Probationary Driving License.
