• Go to the Directorate of Transport.
• Fill in an application form (Form 29, 30).
• Submit the required documents below.
• After verification by the concerned authority, the seller's Insurance Policy will be deemed to be transferred in the name of the transferee but he must get the document transferred in his name within 14 days.

• Fill the application form in the above given site ,upload required proofs, take printout of the application form including Acknowledgement form and go to nearest RTO office before 11:30 a.m.

Apply In Person

1. To Transfer Ownership of Vehicle in Case of Death, the applicant has to approach the RTO office to which your area belongs to. Following link can provide you information related to the list of RTO office: link
2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
4. Make sure that the applicant has to attach all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
6. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
7. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
8. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. #If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
9. An acknowledgment receipt will be provided. Please save it for future reference, it contains the application summary and contact details of the person to be contacted.
10. Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS to the applicant’s mobile number.
11. The processing time for this procedure takes up to 10 - 15 days.

• Form no. CMV 30. If vehicle is covered under Hypothecation/HPA/Lease form CMV 30 shall be produced in duplicate with the consent of financier.
• Registration Certificate , valid insurance, emission Certificate, Fitness certificate in case of transport vehicle, Tax card with uptodate tax paid proof.
• Address proof in original as per rule 4 of CMV rules. .
• In case of LMVs and transport vehicles PAN card . If there is no PAN number form no 61 in case of agriculturists and form no. 60 in case of others.
• Three passport size photographs of the transferee.

For Commercial Vehicle in addition to above

• Permit surrender slip issued by STA branch.
• Challan clearance from Traffic and enforcement branch.
• Tax clearance report from Accounts branch.
• Valid Fitness Certificate

• The legal heirs of the vehicle are eligible to apply for transfer of ownership of vehicle.

Fees for transfer of ownership in case of death is Rs. 100.00

Incase of non transport vehicles like two wheelers and cars, the registration certificate is valid for 15 years from the date of first registration, and it is renewed after every five subsequent years. Incase of transport vehicles like goods and passenger carriers the registration certificate is valid till certificate of fitness is valid.

In case Transfer of Ownership on Death of Owner of vehicle

The transfer of ownership in case of death of the registered owner, the application is to be made by the legal heirs of the vehicle with the required set of documents. The transfer of ownership of a vehicle is to be applied in the concerned motor vehicle office where the vehicle is registered.

All letters of the Registration mark/ Number shall be in English and the figures shall be in Arabic numerals and the letters & figures shall be painted in reflecting colours and be shown :

1. In case of transport vehicles other than those under the rent a cab scheme 1989 in black on white ground.
2. In the case of motor vehicles temporarily registered in red on yellow ground.
3. In the case of motor vehicles in the possession of dealer in white on a red ground.
4. In other cases, in white on a black ground.
5. In the case of transport vehicle under rent a cab scheme,1989, in yellow on a black ground.

The size of registration mark should not be less than :

• For Motor Cycle or Scooters:
  • Height - 35
  • Thickness - 7
  • Space In MM - 5
• For All Motor Vehicles:
  • Height - 65

The registration certificate is used as a proof for the ownership of a vehicle. It can also be used for the transaction,renewal,re-registration of a particular vehicle.
