Civil Marriage

1. In this case, you identify a nearby conservatory for civil marriage, write an application to be married at the conservatory and submit it to the registrar;
2. When documents are received, the registrar publishes a notice of marriage for a given period of time. During this notice period the registrar expects anyone who may oppose marriage, submit his / her objection;
3. When the notice period elapses and no objection is received the registration goes ahead and conduction marriage on the set date and on the same day of marriage, the marriage is registered and a marriage certificate is issued to you;

Religious Marriage

1. In this case, you start by applying for an official marriage at the conservatory for civil marriage, where all processes of official marriage are conducted and at the end of it all a marriage certificate is issued;
2. With the marriage certificate, you then apply for a religious ceremony. here you shall be required to present the Official Marriage certificate to a religious house (church, mosque, temple, synagogue among others);
3. Upon application and presentation of the required documents, a religious marriage ceremony is conducted by a religious leader;

1.Proof of Birth and age for both applicants (Birth certificate);

2.Proof of nationality (Passport / National Identity Card / National Birth Certificate);

3.Divorce certificate (for applicants once married)

4.Photocopies of Identification Documents of two witnesses;

5.Copy of marriage contract (in case where the applicants had earlier been married before a notary public);

6.Copy of marriage certificate (applicants for a religious ceremony);

A registered marriage is valid as long as the both parties are alive and have not obtained a decree of annulment or an official order of divorce.

8.Citizens living abroad may register marriage at any nearby Mozambique embassy or consulate office;

9.Applicants must be aware that in polygamous families only one marriage can be registered;

Marriage is a process in life where two people come to a common understanding and make life-long commitment to each other. Registering marriage is the process of registering the long life commitment for official recognition. Marriage registration in Mozambique is administered by the National Directorate of the Registries and Notary (Direco Nacional de Registos e Notariado, DNRN) which is under the under the Ministry of Justice. The Directorate conducts marriage registration through the conservatories for religious and civil marriages and through the local authorities for traditional marriages.

Applicants must not that traditional marriages are in most not registered but upon application and upon satisfaction that two people have lived together as husband and wife for a period of not less than three (3) years, their marriage may be registered as a de facto marriage in a special book

1.Registering marriage means a marriage is legally recognized;

2.A marriage certificate can be used as an identification document;

3.The collected data is used by government in it population census and planning processes;

4.Registering marriage helps in protection of rights of both parties in relation to property owned by applicants
