Minnesota - Renew your Commercial Driver License


Procedure

  • Obtain renewal license application form at any Drivers License Office or Driver and Vehicle Services Exam Station.
  • Complete and submit the application at the renewal office
  • Make the payment either by personal check or cash only.
  • Screen the Vision for drivers licenses
  • Take the Picture

  • Class A, under age 21: $22.25
  • Motorcycle Endorsement Renewal (2 wheel only): $13
  • Third and Subsequent Knowledge Test after failing first two: $10
  • Expedited (Fast Track) Service: $20, optional fee

How to Renew

  • A renewal license can be obtained at any Drivers License Office or Driver and Vehicle Services Exam Station.
  • Complete an application at the renewal office
  • Payment is by personal check or cash only. For all fee information, please see the complete list
  • Vision is screened for drivers licenses
  • Picture is taken

What to Bring

  • Minnesota driver's license
  • Social Security number (SSN)

Medical Requirements

  • Starting January 30, 2012 you will need to certify the following information with Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS):
    • The type of driving you are engaged in (interstate or intrastate) and
    • Whether you are subject to or exempt from the medical examination requirements of 49 CFR part 391 or Minnesota Statutes, chapter 221
  • The Commercial Driver License Medical Self-Certification Form must be completed and if you certify that you are subject to medical examination requirements, you must provide a copy of your medical examiners certificate and any required waiver.

Medical Waiver

  • A commercial driver may be granted a waiver from the following physical qualification requirements: vision, insulin-dependent diabetes, deaf and hard of hearing and limb impairment.
  • If your medical examiners certificate is only valid with a vision, diabetes or a skills performance evaluation waiver granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), or if you are an intrastate driver with a MnDOT waiver or hold a DVS School Bus Waiver, you must also provide a copy of your waiver.
  • To obtain a federal exemption or waiver, you must contact the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA), which will advise on how to proceed.

Need for the Document

Drivers licenses expire on a persons birthday, unless you have a provisional license. If renewed on or before the expiration date, driving privileges will continue without interruption.
