When ready to apply for your first CDL, Go to a local Secretary of State branch office to:

• Show proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, payroll check stub, W-2 Form).

• If you are applying for a hazardous materials endorsement, you must present proof of the following:

• Federal Security Threat Assessment
• U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident

• Complete an application which includes a statement certifying that you meet medical and driver qualifications.
  

If you have had any change in your physical condition since your last driver license renewal which may affect your ability to drive, you may need a special form from the branch office for your physician to fill out before you can apply for your license.

• Meet driver record eligibility requirements as determined by Secretary of State branch office personnel.

• Pass the required knowledge and vision tests. You must pass all required knowledge tests to obtain a CDL Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP). This allows you to practice driving under supervision of a driver who has a CDL for the type of vehicle you wish to drive. A CDL TIP is also required for taking the CDL skills tests.

• Pay your CDL fees.

• Schedule your CDL skills test.

Apply Online:

1. To Obtain a Farmer Endorsement, the applicant has to approach the Michigan Secretary of State link
2. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
3. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
4. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
6. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
7. The applicant has to pay the prescribed fee as requested by the authority.
8. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
9. The applicant will be required to pass a written test that covers Michigan traffic laws, rules of the road, and safe driving practices.
10. Once the applicant has passed the written test, the applicant will need to take a skills test, which includes a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and a road test.
11. If the applicant passes both the written and skills tests, the applicant will receive your farmer endorsement from the Michigan Secretary of State.
12. This entire process can be completed within 15 days or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

To qualify for the "F" endorsement, a person must meet all of the following conditions:

1. The vehicle is controlled and operated by a farmer. Under the law, "farmer" also includes employees or family members of the farmer.
2. The vehicle is used to transport agricultural products, farm machinery, farm supplies, or a combination of these items to or from a farm.
3. The vehicle is not used as a contract motor carrier (i.e., for hire).
4. The vehicle is operated within 150 miles of the farm.
5. The vehicle being operated is a combination vehicle with a power unit having a GVWR over 26,000 pounds towing a trailer of any size.

Farmers driving the following vehicles do not need an "F" endorsement, as long as they also meet qualifications 1 through 4 listed above:

• Single unit trucks with a GVWR over 26,000 pounds.
• Combination vehicles with a power unit having a GVWR of 26,000 pounds or less towing any size trailer (including those over 10,000 pounds GVWR).
  

Farmers hauling hazardous materials requiring a placard are not eligible for the "F" endorsement, and must apply for a commercial driver license (CDL) with the H-Hazmat endorsement.

To add the "F" endorsement to an operator or chauffeur license, the applicant must pass both the CDL General Knowledge and Combination Vehicles tests. No additional testing (written test or skills test) is required for this endorsement.

The General Knowledge test is waived if a person has a CDL (group B or C). This test was passed when the CDL was issued.

The Combination Vehicles test is waived if the applicant has a group A CDL.
