Mauritius - Request for Soil Samples or Soil Analysis


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Request for Soil Samples or Soil Analysis in person, the applicant should contact the Mauritius Agricultural Services. Contact link
  2. Applicant must visit the Mauritius of Government website and download the application form from this link- link or Applicants should obtain the necessary application form from the authority.
  3. After downloading the application form as a PDF document, the applicant must ensure that all the necessary details on the application form are filled out completely.
  4. The applicant must provide information on the type of soil sample and analysis needed, as well as the location and crop for which the sample is being taken.
  5. The forms will require details on the type of soil sample to be taken, the size and depth of the sample, the location of sampling, and the specific analysis that is needed.
  6. The applicant should provide additional documents, such as a map of the area and relevant information regarding the soil, to complete the application and the documents can be found under the” Required Documents” section of this page.
  7. Once the application form is completed, the applicant must submit it to the MAS authority.
  8. Once the forms are submitted, the MAS will arrange for a technician to visit the site, collect the soil sample, and proceed with the necessary steps.
  9. Applicants must pay any fee associated with the request for soil samples or soil analysis and fee details can be found under the “Fees” section of this page.
  10. The laboratory will analyze the sample that will be sent to them.
  11. Then the applicant will take the sample to a qualified soil technician or engineer to determine the type of soil and its suitability for the project.
  12. The soil technician or engineer will then provide a report on the soil type, its properties, and its suitability for the proposed project.
  13. The applicant will use this information to make a decision on whether to proceed with the project or not.
  14. If the applicant requires further assistance, they can contact the MAS offices for expert advice.
  15. The processing time for a soil sample or soil analysis request is two to three weeks, depending on the complexity of the request.


Required Documents

  1. A completed soil sample request form.
  2. A detailed map of the site, showing the areas to be sampled.
  3. A written explanation of the purpose of the soil sample analysis.
  4. A signed consent form from the landowner (if applicable).
  5. Proof of identity or authorization from the landowner (if applicable).
  6. A valid permit from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (if applicable).
  7. Receipt of payment for the analysis (if applicable).

Instructions

  • All samples for analysis must be accompanied with a duly signed request for analysis. When the samples are submitted to the laboratory, the request for analysis should mention:
  • the nature of the sample, e.g., soil, plant, water, feeds etc.
  • the date of submission of the samples
  • the number of samples
  • the analysis to be carried out, i.e., the parameters to be determined (e.g., nitrogen or phosphorus in soil).
  • Samples should be properly labelled and submitted in sufficient quantities and appropriate containers (See Information for Customer above).
  • Samples will be received in the laboratory on working days during 09.00 – 12.00 hrs and 13.00 – 15.00 hrs.
  • Perishable items (e.g., fresh vegetables, fruits, leaves, etc.) should not be sent on the afternoon of Fridays or on the eve of public holidays.
  • Samples that are not in good condition to be analysed, that is, rotten or perished, will not be accepted for analysis.

  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division (ACD) was founded in 1940. It was then known as the Chemical Division of the Department of Agriculture of the Colony of Mauritius. In 1955, the Chemical Division was restyled as the Agricultural Chemistry Division.
  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division, located in Réduit, is a registered laboratory under the aegis of Ministry of Agro-Industry and Food Security.
  • The Agricultural Chemistry Division provides services for chemical analysis of agricultural materials including water, soil, plants (vegetable and fruits), fertilisers, feed and fodder, compost, farm manure, nuts, maize (corn), rice, honey, fish and fish products for various parameters including nutritional composition, major & minor nutrients, residues, and contaminants.
