Maryland - Obtain a Marriage License


Procedure

  1. Go to the Clerk of the Circuit Court's office.
  2. Present and submit documents required.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Pay the marriage license fee.

  • photo ID
  • any other document to prove identity
  • divorce decree (if either party is divorced)
  • death certificate (if either party is widowed)
  • written parental consent (for minors)

Eligibility

  • Both applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • For one or both applicants who are 15, 16 and 17 years old, parents or guardians must be present for consent or a certificate from a licensed physician stating that the physician has examined the woman to be married and has found that she is pregnant or has given birth to a child.
  • Applicants under 15 years of age are not allowed to marry.

Marriage License fee: $35.00

It is recommended that you contact the Circuit Court Clerk's Office in the county you plan to have your wedding as each county has different fees.




Validity

The marriage license is valid for 6 months.

Instructions

  • Applicants should apply for a marriage license in the county where you'll have your wedding ceremony.
  • Applicants can apply every Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court.
  • It is recommended that you contact first the Circuit Court Clerk's Office in the county you plan to have your wedding because each county has different fees.
  • Only one of the parties needs to appear.
  • Three copies of the marriage license, which the official performing the ceremony will complete. Instructions for completion and distribution are on the copies of the license.
  • There is a waiting period of 48 hours before the couple can get married.




Required Information

  • Full names (first, middle, last)
  • Place of residence
  • Age
  • State of Birth (country if born outside United States)
  • Social Security Numbers (mandatory per Family Law article 2-402 (c)(1))
  • Martial Status (Single, Divorced, Widow or Widower)
  • If previously married:
    • the day, month and year of the divorce, and the county and state in which EACH divorce was granted or death of spouse.
    • Whether or not the parties are related by blood or marriage, and if so, to what degree of the relationship
