Maine - Apply for Driver License


Procedure

  1. Gather all documents you will need to present to apply for the procedure. (Valid identification, proof of residence and legal presence)
  2. Complete and submit application.
  3. Pass all the required tests.
  4. Pay the license fee.


Vision Screening

The vision screening will measure your visual acuity (how clearly you see) and your peripheral vision (how far you can see to either side while looking straight ahead).

The following are required to go through a vision screening:

  • Anyone applying for an initial license, applicants with a valid out-of-state license, anyone changing their license classification, and certain applicants who are older than 40 years old.
  • Applicants older than 40 years old must have a vision screening on the first renewal after attaining 40 years of age, at every second renewal after attaining 40 years of age until attaining 62 years of age, and at every renewal after attaining 62 years of age.

Applicants can have their vision screened at no fee when they appear for their driver's examination, or they can have one done and paid by them by visiting a doctor.





Required Documents

In order to obtain a drivers license you will need to present documents to prove:

  • You are a Maine resident and
  • You are a US citizen or are in the country lawfully (legal presence)
  • If your social security number is not on file with the Secretary of State, you must provide your social security number. If you believe you are ineligible for a social security number, you must present an unexpired immigration document, such as an I-94, to licensing office determine your ineligibility.
  • Additionally if you have had a legal name change due to marriage, divorce or by court order you will be required to show appropriate supporting documentation such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or other court documentation.

Present two of the following documents for proof of identification. One must indicate your date of birth and the other must bear your written signature.

  • Certificate of Marriage
  • Citizenship Papers
  • Concealed Weapons Permit
  • Copy of Marital Application
  • Court Order
  • Divorce Papers
  • Draft Card
  • Driver Education Card
  • Driver's License
  • Driver's Permit
  • Medical Record from Doctor/Hospital
  • Military Dependent ID Card
  • Military Discharge/Separation (DD214)
  • Military ID Card
  • Parent/Guardian {Must appear in person and prove his/her identity (Applies only to minors)}
  • Passport
  • School Records/Transcript (certified)
  • Social Security Card
  • Unemployment Card

In addition to proof of identification, persons seeking to acquire a driver's license or non-driver identification card are required to provide proof of Maine residency and Legal Presence in the U.S.


Proof of ResidenceEdit

In addition to legal presence, any resident seeking to acquire or renew a Maine driver license or Maine non-driver identification card will need to provide documentary evidence of Maine residency. This evidence must contain an actual physical address.

Applicants will need to present one form of evidence that they live in Maine. Some specific examples are listed below. Note: this is not an all inclusive list:

  • Recent Maine Drivers License with a physical address
  • Maine Vehicle Registration or other credential
  • Utility Bill - electric bill, water/sewer bill, cell phone bill, etc.
  • Maine Resident Hunting and or Fishing License
  • Contract in their name - mortgage agreement, lease, insurance policy, insurance ID card, SR22
  • Tax bill
  • Document issued by a government entity
  • Tax return
  • Paycheck stub
  • W-2
  • Conditional order of restoration

Exemptions from providing documentary evidence of Maine residency:

  1. A person who is not a resident that proves they are on active duty in the US Armed Forces.
  2. The spouse or child of a person that is not a resident that has proven they are on active duty in the US Armed Forces.
  3. An out-of-state resident who is a student enrolled in a university, college or school within Maine.


Those who are exempt must provide proof that they qualify for the exemption including an out-of-state residential address. Some examples of proof are:

  • Certified school record/transcript issued by an educational institution in Maine
  • College ID card with no visible signs of irregularity issued by a college or university in Maine
  • Form DS2019 issued to a J-1 scholar (issued and signed by a school in Maine)
  • Military dependent ID card
  • Military ID
  • Military service location orders


Affidavits may be submitted if you are unable to provide documents that contain an actual physical address

If you cannot provide acceptable evidence but resides in Maine or is domiciled in Maine, you may submit affidavits from 2 individuals who knows you and knows your residence or domicile which may include a shelter in Maine.

If you are a minor, only one affidavit is required if it is signed by your parent or guardian.

If you will be submitting an affidavit, use the FORM provided by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. If you would like an affidavit mailed to you, get in touch with Bureau of Motor Vehicles, License Services, 29 State House Station, Augusta, Maine, 04333-0029 or 207-624-9000 Extension 52114 (TTY Users Call Maine relay 711). The affidavit may also be obtained at any of their branch offices.

Legal PresenceEdit

In addition to proving residency, you cannot obtain or renew a drivers license or non driver identification card unless you provide acceptable valid documentary evidence of legal presence in the United States.

Instructions

Applicants must successfully complete a driver knowledge examination and vision screening.

To take a driver knowledge examination and driver road test, applicants will need to present proof of identity

Applicants who are at least 21 years of age will receive an adult provisional license valid for a period of one year.
