Apply via Agent
An application for registration of a Motor Vehicle shall be made to the Registering Authority within a period of 7 days from the date of delivery of such vehicle excluding the period of journey.
Apply In-Person
- To Register a Vehicle in Maharashtra the applicant has to approach the RTO office to which your area belongs to. Following link can provide you information related to the list of RTO office : Regional Office Locations, Transport Commissioners Office Locations
- Application Form 20 is required. Application forms can be obtained from the following link : English Application Forms, Marathi Application Forms
- The applicant should make sure they are eligible for applying by reading through the eligibility criteria that has been listed out under the “Eligibility” section of this page.
- Please make sure you have all the documents that are listed down the “Required Document” section of this page.
- Application forms can be obtained from the appropriate RTO offices that should be completed and presented with appropriate fees.
- Present the completed application forms in one of the counter and pay the appropriate fee where the officials would start processing your application.
- If the authorities are satisfied with the documents that are provided a Vehicle Registration Number will be provided.

- Please enter the “Temporary Registration Number” that has been provided and click “Proceed”.
- Follow the instructions provided in the next screen.

- Sale certificate in Form 21 given by dealer.
- Roadworthiness certificate in form 22 ,22-A from the manufacturer.
- Approval from Transport Commissioner.
- Approval from Transport Commissioner.
- Purchase invoice (for vehicles attracting life time tax).
- Temporary registration if any.
- PAN number or Form-60 in two copies (expect 2 wheelers ).
- Valid insurance certificate.
- Address proof.
- Roadworthiness certificate in form 22-A part II from the body builder for transport vehicles.
- Bill of entry for imported vehicles.
- Octroi receipt if registering in municipal limits.
- Manufacturers certificate for invalid carriage.
- Customs clearance certificate in case of imported vehicles along with licence & bond if any.
- Design approval from transport commissioner in the case of a trailer.
- 7/12 abstract or tahasildar certificate in the case of agricultural tractor & trailer for Tax example.
- Entry tax payment proof if any vehicle, body or tanker is purchased from outside the state.

Eligibility
- On behalf of the owner,dealer can apply for registration.
- If the registration is done temporarily, the owner can apply for registration.

Registration Fees for Vehicles:
- Motor Cycle/Scooter/Two Wheelers - Rs 60
- LMV (Non TPT) - Rs 200
- LMV (TPT) - Rs 300
- Medium Good Vehicle - Rs 400
- Three wheelers - 1000 INR
- Medium Passenger Motor Vehicle - Rs 400
- Heavy Goods Vehicle (Stage Carriers and lorries) - 1500 INR

Validity
Incase of non transport vehicles like two wheelers and cars, the registration certificate is valid for 15 years from the date of first registration,and it is renewed after every five subsequent years.
Incase of transport vehicles like goods and passenger carriers the registration certificate is valid till certificate of fitness is valid.

Instructions
- Register the new vehicle within 7 days from the date of taking delivery from the dealer excluding the period of journey for vehicles on temporary registration.
- No dealer of vehicle can deliver the unregistered motor vehicle to the purchaser. He can only deliver the vehicles which are temporarily /permanently registered with R.T.O.
- No owner of a motor vehicle can allow or permit the use of unregistered vehicle.
- No person can drive a motor vehicle, which is not registered with R.T.O.
- Get the vehicle registered directly from the dealer on his trade certificate.
- Produce vehicle for inspection to RTO . Vehicle is inspected by an inspector of it confirms to the provision of Act & rule then vehicle tax is recovered & new registration number is assigned.

Need for the Document
All the vehicles need to be registered as per the Motor Vehicle Act,1988 . The vehicles are provided with unique registration number. Once the vehicle is registered, a certificate is issued to the owner. The registration certificate is used as a proof for authorised owner of the vehicle.
Exhibiting the Registration No.
All letters of the Registration mark/ Number shall be in English and the figures shall be in Arabic numerals and the letters & figures shall be painted in reflecting colours and be shown :
- In case of transport vehicles other than those under the rent a cab scheme 1989 in black on white ground.
- In the case of motor vehicles temporarily registered in red on yellow ground.
- In the case of motor vehicles in the possession of dealer in white on a red ground.
- In other cases, in white on a black ground.
- In the case of transport vehicle under rent a cab scheme,1989, in yellow on a black ground.
The size of registration mark should not be less than :
- For Motor Cycle or Scooters:

- Thickness - 7
- Space In MM - 5
- For All Motor Vehicles:
- Height - 65
- Thickness - 10
- Space In MM - 10
Other uses of the Document/Certificate
The registration certificate is used as a proof for the ownership of a vehicle. It can also be used for the transaction,renewal,re-registration of a particular vehicle.
