Louisiana - Obtain a Marriage License


Procedure

  1. Go to the parish office.
  2. Present and submit documents required.
  3. Complete the application form.
  4. Pay the marriage license fee.





Required Documents

  • certified copy of each party's birth certificate
  • a translated notarized birth certificate along with a valid state ID card or driver's license (If either party was born out-of-country)
  • a certified copy of the final divorce decree (if either party is divorced)
  • a certified copy of a death certificate (if either party is widowed)
  • proof of social security number (both party)
  • valid passport or naturalization certificate or residency card (if either party was born outside United States)

Eligibility

  • Both applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • For one or both applicants who are 16 and 17 years old, parents or guardians must give their consent.
  • For one or both applicants who are 16 years old, a court order granting permission to obtain a marriage license is required.




Fees

Marriage License: $27.50




Validity

[edit]

A 72 hour waiting period between time of issuance of the Marriage License and the ceremony applies.

Marriage Licenses are valid for thirty (30) days from the date of issuance.

Note: If there is a need for the ceremony to occur prior to the expiration of the 72-hour waiting period, you may apply for a waiver which must be signed by a district judge or justice of the peace authorized to perform the marriage.

Instructions

  • Either bride or groom or both must apply in person.
  • Both of the parties must attend premarital counseling, and sign a declaration of intent witnessed by a notary.
  • Applicants under 18 years of age must bring both of their parents to sign consent forms. Both parents must bring their driver's license.
  • If one parent has full custody, that parent must come in to sign consent forms with his/her driver's license and custody papers showing full custody. Joint custody requires both parent's consent.
