Lithuania - Apply for an Identity Card


Procedure

  • To apply for the ID card, go to your local police office or migration office
  • It will be advisable to contact first your local police or migration office before you apply to know more about the process followed in issuing the card, their office hours and documents that you needed to bring. You can the contact information below to inquire.
  • The ID card can be collected by the actual cardholder or through a representative who need to present an authorization from the cardholder and possess valid identity documents.

Validity

Citizens under the age of 16 are issued with identity cards valid for a period not exceeding 5 years.

For those aged of 16 and up, their identity cards are valid for 10 years.

Instructions

ID cards are issued by institutions authorized by the Ministry of Interior, like local police office or migration service. For those aged 16 and under, applications are submitted by their guardians.




Required Information

The ID card bears the signature of its holder and these following information:

  • Name
  • Gender
  • Date of birth
  • Personal code
  • Nationality

The identity card may also contain:

  • ID card issue date
  • Identity card company name
  • The date of expiration of the identification card
  • Identity card number





Need for the Document

The Lithuanian Identity Card is the main identity document used to confirm the name, nationality and other personal information relating to its holder. It can be presented to identify its holder in the normal enviroment as well as in the electronic enviroment or cyberspace. Card can also be used by the its holder when travelling abroad to countries that acknowledge the use of the ID card as a valid travel document.
