Lesotho - Apply for a passport


Procedure

In Lesotho

  1. Submit all the required documents at the immigration office
  2. Fill in the application form
  3. Have the fingerprints taken by the passport officer
  4. Pay the application fee



Abroad:

If you are a Lesotho citizen who is applying for a New Lesotho Passport outside Lesotho, you should complete an application for the Passport.
You can;

  1. Obtain an application form from any Lesotho Diplomatic or Consular Mission.
  2. Complete the Passport application form for final application form filled by a Consular Officer.
  3. Proof of Lesotho citizenship (old Passport)
  4. Sign the form
  5. Photographs
  6. Pay the prescribed Fee.

Child Passport application should be lodged by a parent/person with parental responsibility over the child.


THE APPLICATION PROCESS (distant applications)

  • On receipt the application letter, an interview will be arranged by the Missions Consular Officer to verify particulars of the applicant.
  • Immediately following this, a passport application form will be dispatched to the applicant to be duly completed and sent back to the High Commission with all the required supporting documents (as indicated in the application form). Where fingerprinting is required, these should be taken at the Office of a Lesotho Honorary Consul, Local Police Station or Commissioner of Oaths. Separate certification of fingerprinting should be provided.
  • The completed application package should be mailed via courier or registered mail to the Lesotho High Commission which will then be forwarded to the Department of Immigration in Maseru which is where all Lesotho Passports are processed. The new Passport will then be sent to the High Commission abroad for collection or onward transmission to the applicant.



THE APPLICATION PROCESS (local applications)

  • Where an applicant is able to present themselves in person to the Lesotho High Commission abroad, they are invited to do so at their convenience within the Missions Consular Hours: Monday to Wednesday between 0900 hours to 1500 hours.
  • Although assistance will be available on a walk-in basis during the Missions Consular hours, applicants are strongly encouraged to make prior arrangements by telephone to secure a confirmed interview time for their application. Applicants should ensure to bring along with them.

Minor (below 16 years) applying off-line
  • Prescribed e-passport application form
  • Newly introduced birth certificate with security features for children aged below 16 years
  • Letter of consent from parent or guardian
  • ID card or valid passport of parent or guardian
  • Passport fee


Adults (16 years and above) applying off-line
  • Prescribed e-passport application form
  • Valid Lesotho Identity Card
  • Two finger prints (left and right :thumbs)
  • Two passport size photos
  • Signature

Instructions

  • All passport are processed in Maseru Lesotho even if application was done abroad upon a successful interview, the application form will be duly completed and the package will be dispatched to the Department of Immigration in Maseru which is where all Lesotho Passports are processed.
  • The new Passport will then be sent to the High Commission for collection or onward transmission to the applicant

Other uses of the Document/Certificate

In a foreign country, a passport is the only way that I almost can prove (nationality, name, age, etc.) and who one is. Therefore, in a foreign country, passport will be required in various places unlike when you are in the country. More specifically,

  • when the immigration, such as in airport
  • when you check in to a hotel
  • when using a (travel checks) travelers checks
  • when asked to present identification from such police officers
