Abroad Application
- Visit the Lesotho diplomatic mission near you and express your interest, please note that same of the embassy required you to first book an appointment with them before visiting the embassy office.
- Fill out the application form, which can be obtained from the embassy offices or download it via the embassy website if available.
- Submit the duly completed application form along with the supporting documents (listed below) for processing.
- Pay the required processing fees, upon which you will be issued with an acknowledgment receipt.
- The embassy or consulate authorized official will check your eligible for an emergency travel document. If you’re not, they will notify you and tell you why.
- You may be issued with the emergency travel document on the day you apply if your circumstances are straightforward and very urgent.
- It may take longer to process your application if the circumstances are more complex. This may force you to change your travel plans.
- If the authorized official is satisfied that all the documents are in order you will be notified of the outcome within 4 working days, re-visit the embassy with the acknowledgment receipt and claim your emergency travel certificate/emergency passport.

- Countries without Lesotho diplomatic mission should contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations in Lesotho for assistance.
- Applicants who want their processed Travel Certificate sent to them by post are advised to attach one of the following to their request(s):
- A registered self-addressed envelope with the appropriate stamps (letter recommendée);
- A pre-paid envelope from any recognized courier service provider.
- Please note Not all embassies offer the post/mail return service (please consult with the embassy)
NOTE: You can file your application and book an appointment through online in some embassies, please confirm with Lesotho embassy of the country hosting you, if they offer this service, since not all embassies offer this service.
Required Documents
- Letter from the applicant requesting for the issuance of an Emergency Travel Certificate (Laissez-Passez).
- Application for children below the age of eighteen (18) must submitted with a consent letter from both parents as indicated on the child’s birth certificate together with copies of the parents’ passports.
- Proof of nationality: (any one of the following)
- copy of the bio-data page of expired passport
- Birth certificate
- Voters ID card
- Two (2) passport photographs
- Police report or a declaration made at the Embassy (If passport is missing/damaged);
- An air ticket or proof of flight booking/reservation
- Application fees (card payment, cash, bank transfer)
- Any other documents that may be requested by the embassy

Eligibility
- All Lesotho citizens who had travel abroad and had their passport lost/stolen/damage or don’t have a valid Lesotho passport.
Fees
- The application fees varies between Embassies. (Please consult the embassy near you)
Validity
- Travel certificate is valid for one (1) month and is for a single journey to Lesotho

Need for the Document
- Emergency Travel certificates /Emergency Passport are issued to Lesotho citizens (Basotho) who wish to urgently return to Lesotho but are not in possession of a valid passport or had their passport lost/stolen/damage.
- An emergency travel document allows you to leave the country you’re in and travel to your destination via a maximum of 5 countries. The emergency travel document can also cover a return journey if you’re resident in the country you’re applying from. An emergency travel document doesn’t guarantee entry to every country. You may also need a visa. You will need to check with the embassy or consulate of the country or countries you’re intending to travel to or through.
