Kosovo - Register a Death and Obtain Certificate


Procedure

  1. Gather all necessary documents needed in registration.
  2. Application forms can be obtain from the registrar's office.
  3. Complete the application form and submit it along all other required documents.
  4. You will received the Death Certificate in a day or two after registration or after the request was submitted.





Required Documents

For death incidents within the territory of Kosovo

  • Completed application form to register the death.
  • Death certificate issued by an institution, if the death occurred in a public or private health institution.
  • Birth Certificate of the deceased.
  • Certificate of marriage for those who were married.
  • Photocopy of identity document or travel document of the person to whom the certificate is required.
  • The testimony of two witnesses who have seen the dead body or identified the body without any doubt, for deaths that occured outside a health facility.


For death incidents abroad

  • Death certificate, or any international equivalent, issued by the state where the death occurred, for death incident that happened outside the territory of Kosovo.
  • Identity document of the deceased
  • Completed application form to register the death.

Eligibility

Death incidents that must be reported or registered with the civil registry:

  • All deaths that occurred in health facilities (hospitals) within the territory of Kosovo.
  • Death incidents occuring outside health institutions (hospital) and within the territory of Kosovo.
  • Citizens of Kosovo who died abroad.
  • Registration of deaths that occured before 1 January 2000, where the deceased died violently and buried without release paper issued by a health facility.

All death incidents that occurred within the territory of Kosovo, and death incidents abroad involving citizens of Kosovo must be recorded at the civil registry. Applications for registration are filed in the municipal assembly near the site where the death occurred or if the person died outside the territory of Kosovo, registration is filed in the last residence of the deceased in Kosovo.

Need for the Document

A Death Certificate is a document issued by the civil registry that declares the date, location and cause of a person's death. A copy of the death certificate is often necessary when you apply for administrative procedures, such as funeral arrangements or execution of the will.

Obtaining a death certificate can only be possible if you have registered first the incident with the civil registry.
