• Inquire at the municipal registry, about the documents you needed to submit. Fill in and submit the application form along with all other required documents.
• The spouses, their witnesses and the registrar, the one officiating the ceremony must all be present during the procedure.
• If your marriage is registered in the registry, you may obtain a marriage certificate. You may obtain it from the municipal registry, where it is registered.

• Completed application form.
• For Foreign Nationals: Persons of foreign nationality must show a document issued by authorities in their home country stating that the foreign national is free to marry, and no existing legal impediment preventing the said individual from getting married. The said document/certificate becomes invalid if the marriage is not entered within six months after its issuance.

• Mutual desire of both partners to get married

Note:

• If there is a reasonable cause and upon the request of the applicant, the competent court may allow a minor older than sixteen years old to get married, if it finds that such person is physically and mentally matured to exercise his/her rights and to fulfill his/her marital obligations.
• Before making a decision, the court shall seek the opinion of the Body Custodian, will hear the minor and the minor's guardian/parent's side respectively. The court will also hear the person with whom the minor is intended to be united by marriage, the opinion of the concerned health care facility. The court will also investigate other circumstamces necessary in coming up with a decision.

To apply for a civil wedding, spouses need to submit their application to the municipal assembly where they are an ordinary resident.

The registrar, who is the one officiating the marriage ceremony has the right to refuse to conduct the said event if requirements are not met.

The following must be present during the marriage ceremony:

• The parties to be united through marriage
• Two witnesses
• The registrar who will perform the ceremony

During the marriage procedure, a person has the right to change her surname by using her husband's surname as her new surname or add her husband's surname to her name. A person may also choose not to change her name at all.

Marriage is a legal contract binding two people together, granting them rights and obligations. A Marriage Certificate is an official statement that two people are married.

A copy of the marriage certificate is often necessary when you apply for administrative procedures, such as obtaining a passport, or applying for a driver's license.

Following are procedures on how to apply to get married and to obtain a marriage certificate.

• Kosovo's Family Law, Article 14, defines marriage as a legally registered union between two persons of different sexes, in which they freely choose to live together in order to create a family.
• Citizens of Kosovo are free to marry whoever they like, regardless of their race, nationality, or religion. Equal rights and obligation will be granted to all those who would like to get married, to those who are married and those who would like to file for a divorce.
• Foreign Nationals may get married in Kosovo, provided they meet the requirements stated in Kosovo's Family Law and has submitted all documents needed.
• The marriage will not be valid if consent is achieved through coercion, threat or actual violence, or any other act that has forced an individual to enter into a marriage contract.
