Kenya - Replace the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Card

  • The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) is a Universal health coverage (UHC) that covers the nuclear family which includes the principal member and legally declared spouse and children. NHIF Branches contact details


Apply in Person

  1. National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) members can apply for replacement of their NHIF card in the case where the card is lost or defaced at any of the regional NHIF offices or huduma centers located countrywide.
  2. The contributor is first required to visit any National Bank, Equity Bank, Co-operative Bank, or Equity Bank and make a payment of Kshs 100. This is the fee charged for replacing a lost NHIF card. Please ensure that you inform the bank teller that you are paying for a card replacement.
  3. The contributor will be issued a bank slip after successfully making the payment, and present the banking slip and copy of their ID card to any NHIF branch or Huduma Centre for processing.
  4. In case the application is filed to Huduma Centre, visit the NHIF desk and seek assistance from there. Applicants will be directed accordingly by the attendants or customer care personnel.
  5. Once the ID card has been verified, the NHIF officer assigned to the applicant will assess the necessary information and re-generate the lost NHIF membership card.
  6. The process is instant, the applicant will be issued with the duplicate membership card instantly, once everything has been processed.

Need for the Document

  • A National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Card proof membership to the scheme, in the case where the card is lost, defaced or stolen members should replace the card.
  • NHIF members who have not enrolled in the new biometric system can still access Health Care services if they visit health facilities with their now obsolete NHIF cards.
