Kenya - Renew Air Traffic Controller Licence


Procedure

  • To renew an Air Traffic Controllers License, the applicant has to contact the nearest Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Branch Offices.
  • Here you will be isseud a Application form for Issue Air Traffic Controller License to fill and submit.
  • The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
  • When all the conditions have been met, and have been satisfactorily certified by the Authority’s Licensing Office, the applicant will be advised to pay the prescribed fees found under the "Fees" section of this page or KCAA Charges page.
  • After paying the prescribed fees, the Air Traffic Controller Licence is renewed within 7 days.

  • A properly completed prescribed Application Form
  • A current Class 3 medical certificate
  • A knowledge test report
  • An ATO Certificate certifying that the applicant has received and passed an approved training course in air traffic control
  • An air traffic controllers licence
  • Personal records substantiating the practical experience shown on the Application Form;
  • Two current passport size photographs (full face)
  • A photo identification card or Passport
  • The prescribed fees

Eligibility

An air traffic controller licence may be renewed if the holder demonstrates, at a level appropriate to the privileges being renewed, the skill, judgement and performance required to provide a safe, orderly and expeditious control service within the six months preceding the date of application for renewal.


Fees

  • Renewal of ATC Licence (Under 40 years) – Kshs 4,000
  • Renewal of ATC Licence (Over 40 years) – Kshs 2,000

Validity

An Air Traffic Controller Licence, in the case of a holder who is—

  • less than forty years of age, is valid from the date the licence is issued or renewed for a period of the remainder of twenty four months validity of the holder’s Medical Certificate; or
  • forty years of age or more, is valid from the date the licence is issued or renewed for a period of the remainder of twelve months validity of the holder’s Medical Certificate.

Where during a continuous period of six months the holder of an air traffic controller licence has not at any time provided at a particular place the type of air traffic control service specified in the rating, the rating cease to be valid for that place at the end of the six months period.

Upon a rating ceasing to be valid as specified for in the paragraph above, the holder of the air traffic controller licence should forthwith inform the Authority to that effect and forward the licence to the Authority to enable the licence to be endorsed accordingly.

The prescribed application forms for the issue, renewal or re-issue of an Air traffic Controller (ATC) licence including rating(s) or additional rating to the Air Traffic Controller’s licence may be obtained from the Authority’s Personnel Licensing (PEL) Office.

Instructions

Arrangements for the medical examination are made by the applicant direct to any Authorised Medical Examiner, names of which could be obtained from the current relevant Aeronautical Information Circular (AIC) on Medical Examiners or from the Personnel Licensing Office. The approved Medical Examiner will advise the applicant on the examination charges.

On satisfactory completion of the medical examination and on payment of the appropriate doctor’s fee, the applicant will be issued with the applicable medical certificate, a copy of which should be attached to the application form for the licence.

Need for the Document

A person should not act as an air traffic controller (ATC) unless that person holds an air traffic controller licence issued under the Regulations. A licence to act as an air traffic controller includes-

  • one or more ratings specifying the type of air traffic control service which the holder of the licence is competent to provide; and
  • a list of the places at which, and the type of radar equipment, if any, with the aid of which the licence holder may provide the service.
