Kenya - Obtain Clinical Officer Private Practice Licence


Procedure

Apply Online

  1. Registered and licensed clinical officers (CO) who practice as a clinical officer privately needs to apply for Private practice liecnse by making an application to the Clinical Officers Council Kenya.
  2. The applicant can make the licensing application online by visiting the Clinical Officers Council Kenya (COC) Portal through the following COC Online Services Portal
  3. Upon entering the accounts’ homepage, click on the “Not Registered” link to register for an account on the COC online portal. This will direct the applicant to the next page where they are are to start their registration process.
  4. Under the “Register for Online Services” menu, input the required information.
  5. The applicant is to select the select “PRACTITIONER” option under the “SELECT CATEGORY” option.
  6. The applicant should then input their input their COC Registration Number, ID Number and their email address.
  7. Upon entering the required information for registration click on the “Register for Online Services” Tab. This will cause a confirmation email address to be sent to the applicants email address.
  8. The applicant should then log into their email address and confirm their registration by clicking on the “Complete Registration” button in the email which has been sent. This will direct the applicant back to the COC Online Services Portal.
  9. Upon entering the portal, the applicant is to edit their profile by their Personal and Professional details, Uploading their Photograph and Changing/Setting their password.
  10. Upon updating the profile, click on the “Private Practice” tab in the menu on the left pane, to enter into the next page.
  11. On the Private Practice page, click on the “Make Private Practice License Application” button to enter the next page where the applicant is required to provide information for their application.
  12. Please provide required information for licensing. These include: -
    • Email
    • Mobile
    • Practice type (Select Clinical or non-Clinical)
    • Area of practice
    • Area of practice
    • Work Station Type
    • Work Station /Facility
    • Work station details (National Government of Kenya, County Government, Private Sector (Health institutions), Other Ministries, Mission, Private, Municipality, Institutional, Unknown, Non-governmental organization, Faith based organization, independent Practice, Others)
    • Select county
    • Workstation /Facility
  13. Confirm that all the information provided is correct and click on the “Submit Application” button. This will cause an invoice for payment of the application fees to be generated.
  14. Proceed to make the payment using the instructions given online. The Payment instructions will be generated and displayed automatically in the portal. More information about the Replacement fees to be paid is given in the “Fee” section of this page
  15. Upon making the application payment, a payment receipt and the Annual Clinical Officer Private Practice License will be generated online.
  16. The applicant should wait for approximately 10 minutes then refresh the invoice page. After refreshing the page, they should find receipt and license ready to be printed.
  17. Click on the “Download Receipt” Button and the “Download License” button to download the payment receipt and Annual Clinical Officer Private Practice License respectively.
  18. Print the receipt and license and keep them for reference.


Apply In-Person:

  1. A registered and licensed clinical officers (CO) who practice as a clinical officer privately needs to apply for Private practice liecnse by making an application to the Clinical Officers Council Kenya. The applicant can do this by visiting the Clinical Officers Council Kenya (COC) offices to make the application
  2. Here the applicant will be given an Application for License for Private Practise Form COC-6 to fill and submit
  3. Fill in the application form and attach the required documents. A list of the required documents is mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Submit the completed application form and all the required documents to the Clinical Officers Council Kenya (COC) offices and proceed to pay the required fees. Details of the required fees for licensing are provided in the “Fees” Section of this page.
  5. Submit the payment receipt to the COC Offices for processing of the licensing application process to begin.
  6. At this point the Clinical Officers Council Kenya (COC) officers will go through the application documents to determine their authenticity and if they meet the requirements.
  7. Upon completion of licensing process, the Clinical Officers Council Kenya will contact the applicant to collect their Clinical Officer Private Practise License in person.
    • The whole process is usually completed after a period of five days.
  8. The applicant will be required to produce proof of identity when collecting the Clinical Officer Private Practice License

Eligibility

  • A clinical officer shall be required to have experience of 3 years or more before applying for a part time licence and 10 years or more in case of a full time licence

Need for the Document

  • The clinical officer private practice license allows the holder to practice as a clinical officer privately in Kenya.
  • No clinical officer shall engage in private practice unless he has been issued with a valid private practice licence practice by the Council.
  • Every Clinical officer practicing in Kenya is required to be registered and licensed with the Clinical Officers Council in accordance with the Clinical Officers (Training, Registration and Licensing) Act, 2017, Laws of Kenya.

  • “clinical officer” means a person who, having successfully undergone a prescribed course of training in an approved training institution, is a holder of a registration certificate issued by the COC.
  • “private practice” means the practice of medicine or dentistry or health work by a clinical officer for a fee either in kind or cash.
  • A person who has been registered by the Council shall be entitled to render medical or dental services in any medical institution in Kenya.
  • A person shall be entitled to registration if he satisfies the Council that he—
    • has successfully undergone a prescribed course of training at an approved training institution.
    • has applied for registration in the prescribed form.
    • has paid the prescribed fees for registration.
    • is a fit and proper person to be registered.

  • The Clinical Officers Council is established by an Act of Parliament to coordinate and regulate the training, registration and licensing of all Clinical Officers under the Clinical Officers (Training, Registration & Licensing) Act Cap 260 Laws of Kenya.
