Kenya - Apply for a Medical Practitioner Internship License


Procedure

  • Internship is a prescribed period of employment during which a medical graduate works under supervision to fulfill registration requirements. During this period, the graduates have an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to be competent practitioners.

Apply Online

  1. Aspiring medical practitioners who have completed their undergraduate training and wish to undertake their internship program need to apply for a medical practitioner internship license by making an application to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). The applicant can make the licensing application online by visiting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s Online Services Portal through the following link: KMPDC Online Services Portal
  2. Upon entering your accounts’ homepage, click on the “Create Account” Option to register for an account on the KMPDC online portal. This will direct you to the next page where you are to start your registration process.
  3. Under the “Register for Online Services” menu input the required information.
    • Select “INTERN” under the “SELECT CADRE” option.
    • Input your “Index/ Registration Number”
    • Input your ID/PASSPORT Number
    • Input your email address
  4. Upon entering the required information for registration click on the “Register for Online Services” Tab.
    • This will cause a confirmation email address to be sent to your email address.
  5. Log into your email address and confirm your registration by clicking on the “Complete Registration” button in the email which has been sent to you.
  6. Please edit your profile by adding your Personal and Professional details, Uploading your Photograph and Changing/Setting your password.
  7. Upon updating your profile, click on the “Annual Practice License” tab in the menu on the left pane, to enter into the next page.
  8. On the Annual practice License page, click on the “Click here to make Application for Internship Practice License for 20xx” button to enter the next page where you are required to provide information for your licencing application.
  9. Please provide required information for licensing. These include:-
    • Email
    • Mobile
    • Practice type (Clinical / Non-Clinical)
    • Type of Application license (Make sure you select Medical Internship )
    • Internship Training Center (National Government , County Government, Private Sector(Health institutions), Training institutions ,Non-governmental organization, Faith based organization, independent Practice, Others)
    • Select county
    • Workstation /Facility
  10. Confirm that all the information you have given is correct and click on the “Save & Continue” button.
    • This will cause an invoice for payment of the application fees to be generated.
  11. On the MPDC Invoice page “Click to Pay Now” button to pay for the Medical Practitioner Internship Licence
    • Proceed to make the payment using the instructions given online. The Payment instructions will be generated and displayed automatically in the portal. More information about the Replacement fees to be paid is given in the “Fee” section of this page
  12. Upon making the application payment, a payment receipt and the Medical Practitioner Internship Licence will be generated online.
    • Note: Wait for approximately 10 minutes then refresh the invoice page. After refreshing the page, you should find receipt and license ready to be printed.
  13. Click on the “Download Receipt “ Button and the “Download License” button to download the payment receipt and Medical Practitioner Internship Licence respectively.
    • Print the receipt and license and keep them for reference.


Apply In-Person

  1. Aspiring medical practitioners who have completed their undergraduate training and wish to undertake their internship program need to apply for a medical practitioner internship license by making an application to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council. The applicant can do this by visiting the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s (KMPDC) offices to make the application. The contact information of the KMPDC offices can be found in the “Office Location & Contact” Section of this page.
  2. Here the applicant will be given an Application for Medical Practitioners Internship Licence form to fill and submit. The application form can also downloaded from the KMPDC’s official website through the following link.
    • Make sure you are eligible to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page.
  3. Fill in the application form and attach the required documents. A list of the required documents is mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Submit the completed application form and all the required documents to the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council’s offices and proceed to pay the required fees. Details of the required fees for licensing are provided in the “Fees” Section of this page.
  5. Submit the payment receipt to the KMPDC Offices for processing of your licensing application process to begin.
    • At this point the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will go through your application documents to determine their authenticity and if they meet the requirements.
  6. Upon the completion of the licensing process, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council will contact the applicant to collect their Medical Practitioner Internship License in person.
    • The whole process is usually completed after a period of five days.
  7. The applicant will be required to produce proof of identity when collecting the Medical Practitioner Internship License.

NB:

  • An internship license and guideline log book are mandatory requirements before the commencement of internship.
  • It is illegal to undertake internship without an internship license issued by the Council
  • Medics aspiring to practice in Kenya must comply with the statutory requirements for registration. Failure to obtain the necessary documentations constitutes an offence under section 22 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act.

  • Evidence of having completed Medical Training in an institution within the EAC that qualifies for reciprocal recognition.
  • Copy of posting letter from the Ministry of Health

Eligibility

  • Evidence of having completed an undergraduate course in a recognised medical school in Kenya.
  • Doctors qualified from medical schools within the East African Community (EAC) region and who qualify for reciprocal recognition.
  • Doctors who have attained the minimum requirement for admission to universities in Kenya, and have qualifications from outside the country must have passed the internship qualifying examinations set by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists’ Board (KMPDB).
  • Evidence of having signed the Hippocratic Oath.
  • Passing the Internship Assessment Exam.

Need for the Document

  • It is illegal to undertake internship without an internship license issued by the Council
  • An Internship helps an intern to consolidate his or her knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to be competent medical practitioners.
  • An Internship is also supposed to enable an intern acquire knowledge of commonly used drugs and their rational use, be conversant with the National Essential Drug List and know the dangerous drugs and poisons Act and its application.

Every medical officer intern shall be required to undergo an internship training program for a period of twelve months (12), and an additional one calendar month of paid leave. The rotations are outlined as follows:

  • Internal Medicine including Dermatology - eleven (11) weeks
  • Surgery including ENT and Ophthalmology - eleven (11) weeks
  • Paediatrics and Child Health - eleven (11) weeks
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology - eleven (11) weeks
  • Mental Health - eight (8) weeks
  • Community Health

  • Undertaking relevant investigations.
  • Guiding relatives and patients with regards to diagnosis, treatment and follow up.
  • Documenting and updating patients notes.
