• Internship is a prescribed period of employment during which a nursing graduate works under supervision to fulfill registration requirements. During this period, the nursing graduates have an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to be competent practitioners.
• Applications for a Kenya Nurse Internship Practice License are done online.

Apply Online

1. Aspiring nurses who have completed their training and wish to undertake their internship program need to apply for a Kenya Nurse Practitioner Internship license by making an application to the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK). The applicant can make the internship practice license application online by visiting the Nursing Councils of Kenya Online Services Portal through the following link: NCK Online Service Portal

   • Make sure you are eligible to make this application. The “Eligibility” requirements are mentioned in the eligibility section of this page

2. Upon entering the portal’s homepage, log into your NCK online portal account, using your NCK students index number and password to make the registration application. If you don’t have an account, you have to create one to make the registration application.
3. Under the “Register for Online Services” menu, input the required information.

   • Select “STUDENT” under the “SELECT CATEGORY” option.
   • Input your “NCK Student Index Number”
   • Input your ID Number
   • Input your email address

4. Upon entering the required information for registration click on the “Register for Online Services” Tab.

   • This will cause a confirmation email address to be sent to your email address.

5. Log into your email address and confirm your registration by clicking on the “Complete Registration” button, in the email which has been sent to you.

   • This will direct you back to the NCK Online Service Portal

6. Please edit your profile by adding your Personal, Academic and Professional details, Uploading your Photograph and Changing/Setting your password.
7. Upon updating your profile, click on the “Internship” tab in the menu on the left pane , to enter into the next page.
8. On the Annual practice License page , click on the “Apply for Internship Practice License for 20xx” button to enter the next page where you are required to provide information for your application.
9. Please provide required information for licensing. These include:-

   • Email
   • Mobile
   • Practice type
   • Cadre (Select General Intern - Basic)
   • Upload your passport photo.
   • Upload heath Declaration ( Not mandatory)

10. Confirm that all the information you have given is correct and click on the “Submit Application” button.

    • This will cause an invoice for payment of the application fees to be generated.

11. On the Invoice page click on the “Click to Pay Now” button to pay for the Internship Practice Licence

    • Proceed to make the payment using the instructions given online. The payment instructions will be generated and displayed automatically in the portal. More information about the licensing fees to be paid is given in the “Fee” section of this page
    • Note: Wait for approximately 10 minutes then refresh the invoice page. After refreshing the page, you should find copies of the receipt ready to be printed.

12. Click on the “Download Receipt “ button to download the payment receipt .

    • Print the receipt and license and keep it for future reference.

13. The applicant will be notified when the internship practice license is ready via telephone call and/or email after a period five days. The applicant can download a copy of the internship practice licence from the NCK online platform.

    • Print the internship practice license and keep it for future reference.

NB:

• An internship license and guideline log book are mandatory requirements before the commencement of internship.
• It is illegal to undertake internship without an internship practice license issued by the Council

• Certified Copy of Diploma / Degree Certificate
• A copy of signed Hippocratic Oath
• Copy of ID/Passport
• Colored passport size Photograph
• Evidence of passing Board Internship Qualifying Exam and letter from Commission for University Education (foreign trained)
• Must appear in the list submitted by deans of Accredited Nursing Training Schools
• Evidence of having completed Nursing Training in an institution within the EAC that qualifies for reciprocal recognition.

• Evidence of having completed nursing training course in a recognized training school in Kenya, or
• Nurses qualified from medical schools within the East African Community (EAC) region and who qualify for reciprocal recognition ,or
• Nurses who have attained the minimum requirement for admission to training institutions in Kenya, and have qualifications from outside the country must have passed the internship qualifying examinations set by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

• The license validity is one year.

• It is illegal to undertake internship without an internship license issued by the Council
• Internship helps an intern to consolidate his or her knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them be competent nursing practitioners.
• Internship is also supposed to enable an intern acquire knowledge of commonly used drugs and their rational use, be conversant with the National Essential Drug List and know the dangerous drugs and poisons Act and its application.

• Nurses and midwives aspiring to practice in Kenya must comply with the statutory requirements for registration and licensing. Failure to obtain the necessary documentations constitutes an offence under the Nurse Act Cap 257. Detailed information on documentation can be accessed via the Board’s website and from the Board’s offices.
