Kenya - Apply for Registration and Licensing to Practice Nursing

For a nurse to practice in Kenya he or she should be licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya. It is the responsibility of the Nursing Council of Kenya to ensure that all nurses that are within its jurisdiction meet a certain level of competence before starting their practice. Thus licensing examination is administered to the nurses using the regional centres and it has 5 different papers for basic cadres and 3 papers for other cadres.

Requirements for Registration Nurses Trained in Kenya
Apply In-Person:

  1. After taking the nursing examinations administered by the NCK, one is required to apply for entry/re-entry to the Nursing council of Kenya by taking the National Licensing Examination.
  2. This application for registration and licensing must be done within 30 days following the release of the results
  3. The students can follow these following steps to access their exams results
    1. On your browser ,go to the Nursing council of Kenya website Click here
    2. Click on the Online services portal
    3. Click on Register or Login if already registered
    4. Click on Examination results and make sure you download and print the results slip to be presented to the Council upon request
  4. The application must be completed in full and be presented to the Registrar, Nursing Council of Kenya through your institution of training.
  5. All applications MUST be accompanied with a copy of your National Identity Card ID]/ passport. Applicants for re-entry to examination MUST also attach the previous NCK Examination Result Slip.
  6. The entry/re-entry to examination fee is KS 5000 for Basic Programmes and KS 7000 for Post-Basic Specialization Programmes.
  7. All payments to the Council should be made through the following bank accounts: Cooperative Bank – Kibera Branch – 01136098613400 or

  9. Please note that if names provided on the application form are different from the Legal Names in the National Identification Card [ID]/Passport, documentary evidence of legal change of name/affidavit MUST also be attached to this form.
  10. Upon successful registration, the applicant will be awarded with a Registration Certificates and Practising license. This usually takes a period of 30 days.
  11. The applicant will be notified to collect his Registration Certificates and Practising license via text or phone call. One is required to bring proof of identification when collecting the documents.

Apply On-line :

  1. Open Nursing Council of Kenya Online Service portal and login :Login
  2. Select Category or Student or Practitioner
  3. For students Enter student index number, ID number and email address
  4. For practitioners enter Registration Number, ID number and email address.
  5. Enter your personal details and press save. Ensure that you enter your correct email address. Create a unique username and password.
  6. Click on the tab “registration and licensing tab”
  7. Click “application for practice licence”
  8. Fill in your work experience, academic qualifications, knowledge of rules, and other NCK licences that you may be having.
  9. Upload your scanned documents in their respective places and press next
  10. Choose examination centre.
  11. Enter the transaction number indicated in the payment slip. The payment date is the date you deposited money to the bank.
  12. Submit your application and print the application notification.
  13. The licence is usually ready after a period of 30 days. Notification for collection will be made through email and text message. One is required to collect the licence in-person from the NCK offices. You are required to carry a proof of identity during collection.

Requirements for Registration Nurses Trained outside Kenya (TOK)
Application In-Person:

  • TOK nurses who wish to be entered into the Nursing Council of Kenya register are required to show that they have attained the required competency by Kenyan Standards. Applicants may make an application using the TOK Registration Application Form.
  • The Council will communicate with your training school to evaluate training received. If the Council is satisfied, you will be invited for an oral interview by the Registration and Licensing Committee. Based on the results of the oral interview, you may be invited to sit a written exam or proceed for a clinical placement to acquaint yourself with health care systems in Kenya for a period to be determined. Upon successful completion of the required clinical placement, you will be eligible for registration

Eligibility

  • One has undergone a prescribed course of instruction and has passed the appropriate examination conducted or prescribed by the Nursing Council of Kenya has undergone a course of training and passed an examination, elsewhere than in Kenya, which the Council recognizes as equivalent to the qualification by examination required by Nursing Council of Kenya
  • One has paid the prescribed enrolment fee
  • One is of good character

  • For a nurse to practice in Kenya he or she should be licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya. The license that will be issued to the nurse needs to be renewed in every three years.
  • The application must be completed in full and be submitted to the Registrar, Nursing Council of Kenya within 30 days following the release of Licensing Examination results by the Council.
  • All applications must be accompanied with copies of your National Identity Card [ID]/passport, NCK Examination Result Slip and 2 colored passport size photographs. Upgrading applicants must also attach copies of previous certificates/qualifications, the original nursing practice license and the nursing practice license (retention) fee.

Each nurse practicing in Kenya is required to be registered and licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya in accordance with the Nurses Act Cap 257 of the Laws of Kenya.

  • For a nurse to practice in Kenya he or she should be licensed with the Nursing Council of Kenya. The license that will be issued to the nurse needs to be renewed in every three years.
  • The license expires on midnight of the expiration date which is the first day of the expiration month.
  • If a nurse does not renew their license their name will be removed from the national register and the registration will lapse according to Cap 257 of Kenyan law.

  • The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) is a statutory body established by the Nurses Act Cap 257 of the Laws of Kenya to ensure the delivery of safe and effective nursing and midwifery care, to the public, through quality education and best practices. It is the only professional regulatory body for all cadres of nursing and midwives in Kenya.
  • The functions of the Council are:
  • to establish and improve standards of all branches of the nursing profession in all their aspects and to safeguard the interests of all nurses
  • to establish and improve the standards of professional nursing and of health care within the community

Renewal and replacement of old/lost practices
When renewing the old practice license must be surrendered to the Council Loss of the practice license must be reported to the council or the nearest police station. Replacement of lost license is KS 1000 Evidence of having undergone 20 hours of professional training every year is required before renewal
