Karnataka - Change your Religion


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. To change one’s religion, the candidate should obtain the religion change affidavit.
  2. The candidate shall approach a notary public and request for a notarized religion change affidavit. The notary public will give the details or requirements for providing the notarized religion change affidavit.
  3. Please provide the information and details (name, the new religion, old religion, address etc) as per the notary public’s guidelines. The notary public will prepare the affidavit on a stamp paper (the value of stamp paper as notified by notary public) and notarize it.
  4. With the notarized religion change affidavit in hand, the candidate should place an advertisement announcing the religion change with details like name and address in a widely circulated regional newspaper.
  5. If the advertisement doesn’t encounter any public objection, then the candidate shall apply for gazette publication (for recording and publishing the applicant’s religion change in the official Gazette).
  6. In order to apply for gazette publication, the applicant shall approach the respective directorate / Commissionerate of Stationery and Printing.

  8. Please visit the respective office and consult with the designated authority to know the applying procedure. Please collect the application form or write on a plain A4 sheet as advised.
  9. Please complete the application form. Attach all the documents as per the “Required Documents” section of this page and submit it to the designated authority along with the fees.
  10. Please follow the “Fees” section of this page for fees related information.
  11. Authorities will check the submitted application and documents to make sure that the required documents and details are in place. If the documents and details are in place, the application will be accepted.
  12. Authorities will make entries about this application in the manual record or electronically using computer. The applicant will be provided with a record number as acknowledgement for future reference.
  13. ”SMS” triggered update on application status will be sent to the applicant’s mobile.
  14. The application will be processed further. After the successful verification of all the documents, the department will publish the change of religion in the official gazette.
  15. The update will happen in 20 days, whereas the booklet can be obtained within 2 to 3 months’ time or as per the timeline provided by the department.
  16. Five copies of Gazettes in which the change of religion is published will be sent through post or can be hand-delivered based on the applicant's request.

  8. Please write down the address on the envelope. Enclose the envelope with the completed application form, requisition letter and the documents as per the “Required Documents” section of this page along with DD for the required fees.
  9. Please send it by registered post and keep the acknowledgement safe for future reference.
  10. The application will be processed further. After the successful verification of all the documents, the department will publish the change of religion in the official gazette.
  11. The applicant may receive ”SMS” triggered update on application status.
  12. The update will happen in 30 days, whereas the booklet can be obtained within 2 to 3 months’ time or as per the timeline provided by the department.
  13. Five copies of Gazettes in which the change of religion is published will be sent through post or can be hand-delivered based on the applicant's request.

  • Address proof of the couple (PAN Card /Driving Licence / Bank Passbook / Electricity Bill / Telephone Bill)
  • Identity proof of the couple (Voter ID / Passport / Aadhaar card / Driving licence)

  • Proof of date of birth (birth certificate or any other acceptable document)
  • Copy of notarized religion change affidavit

  • Self-attested recent passport size photo as per requirement
  • Copy of Conversion certificate (Can obtain from your respective religious institution) as per requirement

  • An undertaking duly signed by the applicant

    • Copy of marriage certificate (for married men/women to change religion)
    • Divorce papers (In case of divorce etc.)


  • Mandatory documents required for minors below 18 years
    • Identity proof – Aadhaar card or school ID
    • Address proof – Aadhaar card or ration card
    • Age proof – Birth certificate
    • One passport size photo


Note:
  • Apart from the above documents, the authorities may ask for additional information or documents. Please provide them for processing.
  • All documents must be self-attested.
  • For minor applicants – the application form should be duly signed by minor if possible and parents or guardians.

Eligibility

  • Any Indian citizen can apply for this procedure (as and when they convert to another religion).
  • Those married men/women willing to change their religion are eligible to apply.



Fees

  • The applicant shall pay the fees or charges as per the authority's advice.
  • Fee needs to be paid for the publication of change of religion, including the cost of five copies of Gazettes and postage charges.


  • Cash payment can be made in the respective cash counter.
  • The payment will also be accepted through DD.


  • The applicant has to pay the notary public charges.
  • The applicant has to buy the judicial stamp paper for the value as advised by the notary public.



Validity

The change of religion recorded/published will be valid forever. But it will be valid till the applicant reconverts again and applies for change of religion.

Instructions

  • The application should be made by the applicant and the application must be signed by the applicant.
  • Please make sure to mention the religion (old religion).
  • The parent or guardian of the minor applicant should sign the notice for change of religion.
  • The notice for a change of religion will be entertained only in respect of persons who are natives of the respective State for which they should give a declaration in the notice.
  • The applicant should obtain the change of religion certificate from the respective religious heads as appropriate.
  • Do not submit fake documents as a proof to get the change of religion.
  • Incomplete application will be rejected.
  • Avoid spelling mistakes while filling the application form.
  • Applicant will be penalized if any information provided by the applicant while applying for the change of religion is being found false or incorrect.

Need for the Document

  • The freedom of religion is one of the fundamental rights of Indian citizen.
  • Changing or reconverting to another religion is legal in India due to self-belief, marriage or divorce.
  • To register the change of religion in all legal documents, the change of religion should be notified in the gazette.
  • This procedure will be helpful to avail certain benefits provided to certain religion to which the citizen was converted.

The applicants are advised to enclose a certificate issued by the Tahsildar or the designated authority to prove the nativity in case of the ration card is not available.
