Isle Of Man - Apply for Video Licence


Procedure

Here's how you can apply for a video licence in Isle of Man:

  1. You will need to complete an application form. You can download a copy of the form online through Isle of Man Government Website (a link is provided under 'Documents to Use' section).
  2. File your application with Isle of Man Office of Fair Trading. Submit the form together with a Postal Order for the amount of £25 made payable to the Isle Of Man Government. Note: You may be required by the Office to submit additional documents depending on the nature of your business. Get in touch with the Office by phone and talk to the person in charge just to make sure you have all the needed documents.
  3. Your application will be reviewed by the Office. It may refer your application for registration to the Chief Constable for his comments.
  4. The Office of Fair Trading will inform you of its decision on your application.
  5. If approved a certificate of registration will be issued to you. Your registration is valid for 12 months or such longer period as may be prescribed.

Eligibility

All suppliers of age classified videos must obtain a licence from the Office of Fair Trading.

Note: Your may be exempt from the video licence if your business does not at present supply age-classified videos (that is those videos with a 12, 15 or 18 classification) and does not intend to do so in the future.

Validity

A Video Licence is valid for a period of 12 months or for a longer period as may be prescribed.

  • Applicant's full name, address and date & place of birth and any other person who may influence the conduct of the business.
  • Name under which the business will be carried on
  • Full address of the place of business in the Isle of Man that is to be registered

Here are the video classifications under the Video Recordings Act 1995

  • U - Universal: suitable for all
  • Uc - Universal: particularly suitable for children
  • PG - Parental Guidance: some scenes unsuitable for young children
  • 12 - Twelve: Not to be supplied to any person below 12
  • 15 - Fifteen: Not to be supplied to any person below 15
  • 18 - Eighteen: Not to be supplied to any person below 18

Videos classified as RESTRICTED 18 must not be supplied in the Isle of Man. The maximum fine for supplying such a video is £5,000.

Exemption : Works which are solely designed to inform, educate, or instruct, concern only sport, religion or music or comprise only video games are exempt from classification, unless they contain scenes of a violent or sexual nature. To be exempted you will need to complete an exemption form declaration.
