1. Applications can be made using the Critical Skills Employment Permit application form.
2. Submit the completed application along with all required documents to the Employment Permits Section of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.
3. Pay the application fee.

Registering with your local immigration officer

Your permit is valid for 2 years, and you are not required to renew it, instead you go to your local immigration officer and apply for permission to live and work in Ireland without an employment permit. Renew your permission to stay in Ireland by registering with your local immigration officer.

To register you must have these following documents with you:

• Passport
• Certificate of Registration (GNIB card)
• Your Critical Skills or Green Card Employment Permit
• Your most recent pay slip

Provided that you are still working in the same occupation, for the same employer and for at least the same salary you will be given a Stamp 4 permission for 2 years. This will allow you to work in Ireland without a permit. If the immigration officer is not satisfied that you meet the qualifying criteria you will be given a Stamp 1 permission for 3 months and referred to the Employment Permits Section of the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. You should send a completed Critical Skills Referral Form (pdf) or Green Card Referral Form (pdf) to the Employment Permits Sections.

Critical Skills Employment Permit

There are 2 categories of eligible occupations for a Critical Skills Employment Permit:

1. Jobs with annual salaries of 60,000 or more all occupations (other than certain ineligible job categories and those which are contrary to the public interest)
2. Jobs with annual salaries of 30,000 or more the occupation must be on the Highly Skilled Occupations List.

Beginning 10 April 2013, non-EEA nationals with a stamp 1, 1A, 2, 2A or 3 residence permission, who have been offered a job in an occupation on the Highly Skilled Occupations List, may apply for an employment permit.

Qualifications:

• Applicants must be directly employed and paid by his/her employer. Job offers from recruitment agencies and other intermediaries are not acceptable .
• The job offer must be for 2 years or more.
• The employer must be trading in Ireland, registered with Revenue and with the Companies Registration Office.
• Applicants must have the qualifications, skills and experience required for the job. For jobs in the 30,000 or more salary range you must have a degree qualification or higher. For jobs with an annual salary of 60,000 or over, you must have a degree or equivalent experience.

New application:

• Duration of permit - up to 2 years: 1,000

GNIB Certificate of Registration: 300

Notes:

• The fee must be paid by the applicant.
• If an application is refused or withdrawn, 90% of the fee will be refunded to the applicant.
• Payments from businesses are made by electronic fund transfer (EFT).

The Critical Skills (and Green Card) Employment Permit is issued for 2 years.

Employment Permits are issued by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.

Who may apply for the permit: Either the employer or the employee can apply for a permit which must be based on an offer of employment.

When the permit is issued to the employee it includes a statement of the employee's rights and entitlements. An employee working on an employment permit is protected by employment legislation in exactly the same way as other employees.
