- To Become an Eco School in Indiana (United States), the applicant has to make the application National Wildlife Federation’s Eco School Portal link
- Click on “Register an International School” and enter School name, Country and Zip code.
- The Applicant has to fill in all the necessary information in the application form.
- The Applicant has to upload all the necessary documents that are Mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
- The Applicant has to review the application and submit the application form.
- The registration to become an Eco School is free of cost.
- The authority will review the application, once the application meets all the requirements the registration will be completed within a week.
Once the registration is completed, the Eco school must follow these 7 steps:
STEP 1 - Establish an Eco-Action Team:
- The Eco-Schools Committee is the driving force behind the Eco-Schools process and will represent the ideas of the whole school.
- The Eco Committee ensures that the entire school knows about Eco-Schools and will receive regular updates.
- The Eco Committee meets regularly to discuss environmental and social actions for the school.
STEP 2 - Carry out a Sustainability Audit:
- This step will help the Eco-Action Team understand the current environmental situation of the school and will provide a basis for the Eco-Action Plan.
- The Eco-Schools USA Environmental Review checklist can help the team figure out which of the pathways it should focus on.
STEP 3 - Eco-Action Plan:
- The Action Plan is the core of Eco-Schools work and should be developed using the results of the Sustainability Audit.
- Use the Sustainability Audit to identify the priority areas in your school. To keep it manageable we suggest focusing on not more than three Themes at a time.
- Goals should be achievable and provide realistic targets and deadlines to improve the environmental quality of the school.
STEP 4 - Monitor and Evaluate:
- This process will use to gauge your progress should be developed in parallel with the development of your Eco-Action Plan.
STEP 5 - Curriculum Work:
- Besides increasing the status of the program, linking Eco-Schools activities to the curriculum ensures that Eco-Schools is truly integrated within the school community.
- Integrating the programme into the curriculum can be done, either directly through specific classes or innovative teaching.
STEP 6 - Inform and Involve the Community:
- Get everyone on board! Actions should not just be confined to the school: for example, pupils should take home ideas to put into practice.
STEP 7: Produce an Eco Code:
- The code will state the school's views about the environment. It contains your mission statement that reflects your Eco-Action Plan and your curriculum. How the Eco-Code is formatted is entirely up to the school. Your Eco-Code can be in any form, a list of statements, a song or rap, or a poem.

- Fees for registering an Eco School is free of cost.

Need for the Document
- Eco-Schools is a growing phenomenon, which encourages young people to engage in their environment by allowing them the opportunity to actively protect it. It starts in the classroom; it expands to the school and eventually fosters change in the community at large.

Awards Criteria:
Bronze Award:
- The school has identified an Eco-Action Team that is composed of a diverse group of teachers and students.
- The group meets at least 4 times a year.
- Informal minutes are kept at each meeting
- The group informs the whole school of committee discussions and actions.
Silver Award:
- The school has identified an Eco-Action Team which is composed of students, teachers and community members.
- The group meets at least 6 times a year.
- Students are part of the decision-making process and share responsibility for keeping minutes for each meeting.
- Students are responsible for communicating Eco-Action Team information to the whole school.
Green Flag Award:
- The school has identified an Eco-Action Team which has strong representation from students (at least 50%), and also includes teachers, other school staff and community members.
- Students take significant responsibility for conducting the Eco-Action Team meetings and the team's decision-making process.
- The group meets at least 8 times a year.
- Students share responsibility for keeping minutes for each meeting and communicating information to the whole school.
- Student representatives actively engage other students and collect suggestions from the greater student body.
