Iceland - Obtain a Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate


Procedure

  • You may order a birth, death or marriage certificate online and pay by credit card. You may only order a certificate for yourself, your children and individuals under your custody. You can not place an online request for a Historical Marriage Certificate (Price: 6,800 kr.)
  • Certificates that will be issued to you are based on the registration information kept at the National Register.
  • To be able to place an online request for a certificate, you will need to log in. It may take you 5-10 minutes to obtain the key you will need to do online banking, then log in, change it and provide information about your contact number and email address.
  • All certificates are sent by post . You may also request for your certificate be sent to your email address, this is possible for orders received online or upon presentation of a valid ID at the reception desk.


Other certificates that may be obtained online:

  • Seat Certificates:
Certificates issued to students showing their current residence as well as data on place of residence and periods.
  • Custody Certificates:
Certificate of arrangement custody specified name, ID number and domicile of the child, the names and ID numbers of custodians and custodial arrangements.
  • Marital Status Certificate:
It is a certificate that indicate's an individual's current marital status, Example: unmarried, divorced, etc.
  • Citizenship Certificate:
This certificate is issued to citizens of Iceland as proof of citizenship. The certificates shows a person's full name, social security number, gender and residence.
  • Certificate of Co-existence:
Certificate of current cohabitation, when it began and where the partners are residing.
  • Certificate of life:
This certificates indicates that a person is alive. The certificates shows a person's full name, social security number, gender and residence.
  • Confirmation of current residence for the whole family at the same number:
Certificate of current domicile of individuals that have the same family number. If the residence is in Iceland the address is specified, if abroad then only the specified country.
  • Confirmation of current residence for an individual:
Certificate of existing residence. If the residence is in Iceland the address is specified, if abroad then only the specified country.
  • Certificate of name change:
Certificate of current name and previous / other names that have been listed in the National Register. The certificates also shows an individual's social security number, gender and residence.


Note: In case the certificate that you need can not be ordered online, you can contact the Registry Office's customer support desk in Iceland

Processing Time

It takes about an average of 5-8 working days for a certificate to be ready and 8-10 working days when the load is high. Your request will be processed the moment your payment is received. Allow additional processing time for the shipment of you certificate.
