1. To renew your ID card visit your local town hall. If you live in Paris you may go to a police branch of your choice. To those who are living abroad, apply for a National Identity Card at the Embassy or Consulate. Applications must be submitted in person.
2. The application form is available at the counter. Make sure to fill in the form correctly and do not forget to sign the form.
3. The documents you will be required to submit will depend on the date of issuance of the card you are renewing or whether you possess a passport. Note: You may need to set up an appointment in order to submit your application.
4. The identity card is not manufactured on site and therefore it can not be issued immediately. The amount of time for an identity card to be issued depends on where and when was the application submitted.

Monitoring your application:

If you have provided your mobile number on the form, you will receive notification via SMS informing you that you may now collect your identity card. Note: This service is not available for applications submitted in Paris or overseas.

Collecting the Identity Card

The old identity card must be surrender before the new one is issued.

The card must be collected 3 months after its availability. After this time, the new card will be destroyed.

The ID card being renewed was issued recently (valid or expired within the last 5 years):

• The old identity card: original and photocopy
• Two (2) identical passport photographs (must meet standards)
• Proof of address: original and photocopy

The ID card expired more than 5 years ago:

• Have a valid passport:
  • The old identity card: original and photocopy
  • Two (2) identical passport photographs (must meet standards)
  • Proof of address: original and photocopy
  • The passport: original and photocopy
• Have a passport but its validity already expired:
  • The old identity card: original and photocopy
  • Two (2) identical passport photographs (must meet standards)
  • Proof of address: original and photocopy
  • Your secure passport (electronic or biometric) expired less than 5 years or your Delphine passport expired less than 2 years: original and photocopy
  • If the passport is older: birth certificate of less than 3 months (extract or affiliation with full copy): Original
  • If the birth certificate does not prove the applicant's nationality: an original and photocopy of proof of French nationality
• Do not have a passport:
  • The old identity card: original and photocopy
  • Two (2) identical passport photographs (must meet standards)
  • Proof of address: original and photocopy
  • Birth certificate obtained not more than 3 months ago (extract or affiliation with full copy): Original
  • If the birth certificate does not prove the applicant's nationality: an original and photocopy of proof of French nationality

Supporting documents must be submitted if you have changed your name and it is not yet reflected on any of your identification documents.

Note: Documents to be submitted will be according to the nature of this second name: name of spouse or name of the other parent.

You can apply to renew your ID card before or after its expiration date.

The old card must be presented. If you can no longer present the card, the application process will be different, the procedure you will be applying for is for lost or stolen card instead.
