Ghana - Obtain Seed Import Licence (permit)

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Obtain Seed import License (permit) in person, the applicant has to approach the Food and Drug Authority or Ministry of Food and Agriculture Offices in Ghana. Contact link
  2. Application form should obtain the respective office.
  3. Applicant has to enter all the information in the application form.
  4. Also, make sure that the applicant has all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
  5. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
  6. Submit the completed application form and pay the required application fee and submit the receipt as proof of payment.
  7. Once the application is received, the authorities will verify the details and provide applicant with receipt. Keep it safe for the future transaction. Authorities will inform about the successive steps.
  8. Where the Authority is satisfied that the application for a Seed Import License (Permit) has satisfied all the requirements necessary for the grant of the license and upon payment of the prescribed fee, the Authority may grant him/her the license.
  9. Collect the applicant license from where his/her application was submitted within a 30 days from the date the application was received at Ghana respective authority in case there is no rejection.
  10. This process takes a maximum of 30 days.

Eligibility

  • Any person carrying out seed import business in Ghana jurisdiction except those who are exempted under seed and Plant Act 2006 are eligible to obtain Seed Export license.




Fees

  • Application fees is GHS 1,000 (Non-refundable)
  • License fees is GHS 5,000




Validity

  • This is valid for a period of 6 months.

Need for the Document

  • Purpose is to regulate importation of seeds into the country.
  • The objective of these Regulations are to promote, regulate and control plant breeding, variety release, Multiplication, conditioning, marketing, importing and quality assurance of seeds and other planting materials and for other related matters.

There is established by the Board, for the purposes of seed production and marketing five seed classes as follows:-

  • Breeder seed.
  • Basic seed.
  • Certified seed first generation.
  • Certified seed second generation. and
  • Standard seed.
