Ghana - Contracting a Civil Marriage

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Apply for Contracting a Civil Marriage in person, the applicant has to approach the Register General Department in Ghana. Contact link
  2. Intending couple should appear in person before the Registrar of Marriages for an interview.
  3. They should show up with the required documents in the next section.
  4. Where parties are between 18 and 21 years, they should submit the additional documents and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
  5. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
  6. The intending couple fills in a notice of marriage before a registrar and is given assessment forms to make payments at any bank of his choice.
  7. The notice of marriage is pinned up on our notice board for 21 calendar days.
  8. If there is no objection to the marriage, the ceremony takes place between 21 and 90 days on Monday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.
  9. If there is an objection, a caveat is placed and the matter is referred to court.
  10. The Processing time for this procedure is 21 to 90 days.





Required Documents

  • Proof of nationality for example a voters card, passport or national identification card
  • An LC 1 letter to prove residence in Kampala district for at least 15 days
  • A passport size photograph for identification
  • Marriage affidavits that conform with S.10 of the Marriage Act
  • In case of foreign nationals, a letter from your Civil Registration or Vital Statistics Office confirming that the party is not married

  • Individuals (couples) who had register their marriage with the marriage register and have decided to cancel the marriage booking due to certain reason are required to inform the register.

  • Marriage under the ordinance is the civil union available to any Ghanaian to take advantage of, and despite some confusion, it is entirely secular and not religious (Christian) at all.
  • This is governed by Marriages Act (Cap 127) and is the only, strictly monogamous legal means of marriage in Ghana.
