Apply In-Person:

1. To Complaint about Smoke Nuisance, the applicant has to approach the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) office in Ghana Contact link
2. The written application form should be filled all the details while submitted to the office.
3. The applicant has to make sure he or she has all the required documents that are required for this process to be successful and they can be found under the "Required Documents" section of this page.
4. Applicant should attach photocopies of the documents (whichever is necessary) along with the applicant form while submitting it at the office.
5. Payment of appropriate fees should be made and that can be found under the "Fees" section of this page.
6. Applicant must provide the Types of vehicles he/she can report.
7. EPA may be able to investigate if applicant’s concerned about smoke in his/her local area.
8. Call the pollution hotline on 1300 372 842. The respective officials here 24 hours. Always call 000 in an emergency.
9. Applicants can report a smoky vehicle to EPA. It must be less than 4.5 tonnes and release smoke for 10 seconds or more.
10. Applicants can tell us about any smoky vehicle less than 4.5 tonnes. Report smoke from large trucks and buses over 4.5 tonnes to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
11. The respective officials deal with reports about smoky cars and vehicles registered in Ghana.
12. Reporting smoky vehicles to EPA helps them to prevent air pollution in Ghana.
13. Applicant should report a smoky vehicle within 14 days of when he/she saw it.
14. As given below, the applicant should give the complaint with proper evidence.
15. If applicant’s complaint is correct, the EPA office will investigate his/her complaint and take appropriate action.
16. This process will take place within the next 24 hours after seeing his/her complaint.
17. After applicants report a smoky car or vehicle, the respective officials will check the vehicle description with Ghana Roads.
18. If the details match, the respective officials will write to the owner and tell them to get their vehicle checked for repairs.

• In Ghana permissible ambient noise as set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for residential areas requires that, during the day noise levels should not be above 55 decibels during the day and 48 at night (EPA, 2008).

• Smoke pollution caused by smoky and hazards to people can be avoided by filing this complaint. This complaint will greatly help to avoid smoke nuisance if humans, animals, birds are not to be affected and the environment is not polluted by this smoke. Therefore, if pollution is avoided, the risks of human pollution to humans such as asthma, cancer and liver and heart can be avoided as much as possible.

• EPA or a designated Federal agency regulates noise sources, such as rail and motor carriers, low noise emission products, construction equipment, transport equipment, trucks, motorcycles, and the labelling of hearing protection devices
