1. Fill out the application form. Forms are available from the passport office or you may fill out an application online. For forms filled out online, print a copy of the completed form and bring it along with you when you apply.
2. You may submit your application at any passport office in France equipped with a biometric station or consular office of France abroad. Submission of application may be done by appointment only, it will be advisable if you will try to inquire first before proceeding to the passport office.
3. Submit all other required documents.
4. Pay the application fee.
5. Through the mobile number you provided in the application form, you will receive an alert via SMS when the biometric passport is available.
6. The old passport must be surrendered when you pick up the new one. If it had a visa, it may be maintained for the duration of validity of the visa. You must personally collect your passport within 3 months after it was ready to be picked up. Uncollected passports within this period will be destroyed, and you will have to apply again.

If you are in possession of a secured document (even if it is no longer valid) you do not need to provide once again documents related to your civil status or French nationality.

If the old passport is secured or recent (valid or expired less than 2 years ago):

• Completed application form
• Revenue Stamps: 86 or 89 for an application abroad or overseas if the picture is taken directly at the counter.
• Two identical passport photos that comply with the standards.
• Proof of residence : the original and a photocopy
• Old passport: the original and a photocopy

If the old passport expired more than 2 years ago:

• Completed application form
• Revenue Stamps: 86 or 89 for an application abroad or overseas if the picture is taken directly at the counter.

• Secure identification card (plastic): the original and a photocopy
• If you do not have a secure identity card, you may submit your original birth certificate not older than 3 months (extracted with filiation or integral copy)
  • If you were born in a town affected by the dematerialization of civil status documents, you do not need to produce a birth certificate.
• If the birth certificate does not provide evidence of citizenship you must present proof of your French nationality: the original and a photocopy

Note: If you want to use a name different from the one printed on your identity card, other documents must be presented depending on the nature of this second name: name of the spouse or name of the other parent.

Passports are not made at the same office where you applied therefore it can not be issued immediately. The amount of time it needs to process an application varies depending on the place and time the request was made, for example, applications submitted before the start of summer vacation may take longer to be completed compare to those submitted after.

You may renew your passport before or after its expiry date. However, if you wish to renew you passport before its expiry date, the amount paid for the period of non-use of the old passport will not be deducted from the new passport.

To renew your passport, gather all necessary documents and personally apply at your local town hall, at the police station of your choice if you live in Paris or at a French Embassy or Consulate if you live abroad. Documents to be submitted vary depending on your situation and in particular your possession of secured documents (passport or identity card).
