Fiji - Obtain a Non-Governmental Organisation Certificate


Procedure

Apply In-Person:

  1. The Applicant who wish to obtain a Non-Government Organization Certificate must visit the registrar of titles office. Contacts
  2. The details will be provided by the officials in the Registrar office.
  3. Make sure that you have all the documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Also prepare an application for registration and submit it together with the required documents to the Registrar of Titles.
  5. After submitting the application, the registrar will verify the application to determine eligibility of applicant and are under the law.
  6. The approval and rejection of the Non-Government organization certificate is decided by the Registrar.
  7. If the application is accepted, the Non-Government Organization will be registered.
  8. Finally, the registrar will issue the Non-Government Organization Certificate.
  9. Upon registration, the organization trustees are fully recognized by the courts.

  • Copy of bye laws of the organization.
  • Schedule of shares.
  • Passport photographs.

In order to be eligible, a Non-Government Organization must have a sole aim of providing assistance to the society with no aim of making profits.

  • The Non-Government Organization that wishes to obtain certificate should be offering activities that are not available in the proposed area of operation;
  • Ensure that the Non-Government Organization that wishes to obtain a certificate is a non-profit organization;
  • Ensure that the Non-Government Organization seeking to obtain the registration certificate meets the number of members required;
  • The registrar of titles may for any genuine reasons cancel registration of an organization;

  • Name of the Board to be incorporated.
  • Name and address of Non-Government Organization.
  • Details of the organizations registered office.
  • Description of the Trustees.
  • The method and date of appointment of the trustees.
  • The proposed device of the common seal.
  • The object of charity.
  • Proposed activities.
  • Details of property that belongs to organization.
  • Organizations bye laws.




Need for the Document

  • Non-Government Organizations are set up to provide assistance to a number of issues in the country.
  • In Fiji, like in another country, the Non-Government Organizations are setup for the same purposes, such organizations provide advisory, legal assistance, protection of rights of others.
  • In order for a Non-Government Organization to be registered, application should be submitted through the Charitable Trusts Act to the Registrar of Titles.

  • If a certificate is lost or destroyed, an application for a duplicate certificate must be sent to the registrar.
  • A certificate of registration may be cancelled if:
    • It was obtained in a deceitful way.
    • Any of the objects of the registered organization has become unlawful.
    • If organization is used for illegal purposes, or
    • If the organization has been dissolved.



Other uses of the Document/Certificate

  • A registered Non-Government Organization provides assistance to the local people.
  • The Non-Government Organization certificate indicates that the organization is officially recognized by the government.
  • A registered Non-Government Organization has some legal liability protection. Thus, it may be easier to obtain business insurance, or attract investors.
