Ethiopia - Renewal of a Mining Lease

Apply In-Person:

  1. To Renew a Mining Lease, the applicant has to approach in Ministry of Mines and Petroleum contact link
  2. The following are some of the main steps to be carried out prior to the issue of a mining lease.
    • Carrying out a mining feasibility study and an approved cadastral survey of the deposit.
    • Preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIA) in accordance with the requirement of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination laws. This must be approved by the National Environment Management Authority. The EIA is subject to public comments before such approval;
  3. Applicant has to get the application form for renewing from the respective office.
  4. Applicant must provide all necessary information in the application form.
  5. Make sure you have all the documents mentioned in “Required Documents” section of this page.
  6. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form while submitting the application form.
  7. Fee for this procedure is given the “Fees” section of this procedure.
  8. If all above-mentioned procedures were followed properly by the applicant, the board will issue the license.




Required Documents

  • A proposed programs of mining operations to be carried out during the term of renewal.
  • A plan of the area in respect of which renewal of the mining license is sought including all or any of the contiguous blocks in the mining license area.
  • An approved environmental impact assessment license, social heritage assessment and environmental management plan in respect of the applicant's proposals, where required under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act.
  • Any additional documents as the Cabinet Secretary may prescribe.

Resolution Criteria:

  • Fulfilled requirements
  • Payment of annual rent and renewal/registration fees.
  • Renewal document and the duplicate are taken for stamp duty at the cost of the lessee before registration.

Need for the Document

A Mining Lease is issued to a holder of any prospecting right and provides the lessee the right to extract deposits within the land area of the mining lease, including the right to remove and dispose of the minerals as specified in the lease.
