Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for obtaining a Vehicle Identification Number Plate is available in Ethiopian Ministry of Transport contact link
2. Applicant must make sure to carry documents that are listed under “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
3. Applicant has to attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
4. Fee for obtaining a number plate is 5000 Birr.
5. If all the procedures mentioned above are followed properly, applicant can get their identification number plate in 15 days.
6. If the applicant didn’t get the number plate within 15 days, applicant can visit the ministry to know the details of their application.

Identification number plates shall be affixed and displayed as follows:

• In case of a motor cycle, at the right angle to the longitudinal axis of the back of the motor cycle.
• In case of a motor vehicle, at the right angles to the longitudinal axis of both the front and back elevations of the vehicle arranged for such purpose;
• In case of a trailer, at the right angle to the longitudinal axis of the back of the trailer arranged for such purpose.
• An identification number plate of any vehicle shall be displayed so as to be clearly distinguishable and be free from any obstruction.
• Exchange and Replacement of Identification Number Plates
• Where the owner or possessor of a vehicle becomes aware of a defect in the color or letter combination or any other feature of an identification number plate, he shall, within 10 days starting from the date of issuance of the same present the plate to the appropriate organ for exchange with the correct plate.
  

You must bring one of the following to show you’re allowed to display the registration number:

• Vehicle registration certificate.
• New keeper supplement.
• Certificate of entitlement to the number
• A renewal reminder for vehicle tax
• Temporary registration certificate
• A number plate authorization certificate with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
• A letter of authorization from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate.
  

• Any vehicle may not be operated on any road in Ethiopia unless an identification number plate issued by the appropriate organ has been affixed to it. Most vehicles in Ethiopia are required to display registration plates.
• These are provided for a vehicle when it is first registered in Ethiopia General purpose plates are alpha numeric (containing both letters and numbers), with up to six characters. A registration plate stays with a vehicle for the length of its life, unless it's replaced after being lost, stolen or damaged, or with personalized plates.
