Apply In-Person:

1. Application form for obtaining a recreational pilot certificate is available in Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority contact link
2. Applicant has to fill-in all the necessary details in the application form.
3. Applicant must make sure to carry documents that are listed under “Required Documents” section of this page (Both photocopies and originals).
4. Applicant has to attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form.
5. Fee must be paid as per the request of the authority.
6. If all the procedures mentioned above are followed properly, applicant can get their certificate within 3 months.
7. If the certificate has not been issued within 3 months, then, the applicant can visit the office to know the details of their application.

• Valid third-class medical certificate or a valid driver’s license.

• Sport pilot certificate.
  

Applicants will be required to present the following documents if selected for the zonal recruitment test

• Two recent passport size photographs to be stamped and countersigned by officer of appropriate rank specified,
• Local Government Chairmen/Secretaries and other specified officers
• Birth Certificate/Declaration of Age.

• Applicant must be at least 21 years old.
• For each category, the applicant has to complete the relevant flight training at the Flying school in Ethiopia.
• Pass General English Language Assessment Test
• Pass Recreational Pilot License theory exam
• Pass Recreational Pilot License flight test
• Have at least 25 hours flying time including a minimum of 20 hours’ dual and five hours as pilot in command.
• Meet medical requirements
• Have a class 1 or 2 medical certificates to fly above 10,000 ft.
  

The Fee must be paid as per the authority’s request.

Recreational Pilot Certificate is valid for 24 months starting from the date in which the certificate is issued.

A Recreational pilot certificate is not transferred to the new certificate. Keep the old certificate as a record of these endorsements.

• A recreational pilot license (RPL) is a flight crew license introduced. It authorizes pilots to fly light, single-engine aircraft as the pilot-in-command or co-pilot.
• The recreational pilot certificate requires fewer training hours than the private certificate and can be earned in as few as 30 hours as compared to the 40 hours needed for the private.
• The reasoning behind this is that as a recreational pilot you receive fewer hours of cross-country navigation training because you must remain within 50 nautical miles of your home base.
• The RPL replaces the student pilot license and general flying progress test (GFPT) that existed under the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority If you have an RPL you can fly without supervision from a flight instructor or flying school.
