1. Application form for intellectual property or patent application in Ethiopia is available in Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office contact link
2. Applicant must provide all necessary information in the application form before submitting it.
3. Applicant should make sure to carry photocopies and originals of all documents needed for this procedure to complete.
4. Documents that are needed for completing this procedure are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page.
5. Applicant should make sure to attach photocopies of necessary documents along with the application form while submitting it at the office.
6. Fee for this procedure has to be paid as per authority’s request.
7. If all above-mentioned procedures were followed properly, applicant can get their document within 7 to 14 days.
8. Applicant can get the document from the office after getting notification from concerned authorities.
9. If there is no information about the application even after 7 to 14 days, applicant can visit the office to know status of their application.

• This process helps an individual for owning patent to a particular brand or product in Ethiopia.

• Various activities by Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office to promote, use the patent system in universities (mostly through BIO-EARN program).
• The Office developed guidelines for the formulation of institutional IP policies. Conducted various IP awareness creation programs.
• Some change of attitude towards the patent system is observed. So far none of the universities have IP policies.
