Ethiopia - Apply for National Health Insurance Fund

Apply In-Person:

  1. Application for National Health Insurance Fund in Ethiopia is available in the Ethiopian Health Insurance Agency (EHIA) contact link
  2. Applicant must provide all necessary information in the application form.
  3. Documents that are needed for this procedure are mentioned under “Required Documents” section of this page.
  4. Applicant should carry photocopies and originals of all the documents while applying for this procedure.
  5. Applicant should attach photocopies of documents (whichever is necessary) along with the application form while submitting the application form.
  6. The fee for this procedure has to be paid as per authority’s request.
  7. If all above-mentioned procedures were followed properly by the applicant, the health insurance fund will be provided within one month.
  8. Applicant can collect their document by visiting the office after one month or after getting a confirmation email or SMS from concerned authorities.
  9. If there is no information related to fund is provided to the applicant within a month, they can visit the office to know the status of their application.

Citizens of Ethiopia and permanent residents of Ethiopia who are above the age of 18 and above are eligible for getting a national health Insurance Fund.

National Health Insurance Fund is necessary for individuals who are willing to take medical Insurance in Ethiopia.


Information which might help

  • If a self-employed person has not contributed for 12 months after taking the card, then, the card will be deactivated.
  • Claims will be submitted directly to the Insurance providers by the hospitals after the applicant of the health insurance is discharged from the hospital.
