Step by step on how to order a personalized licence plate for your vehicle.

Step I

• Start by registering vehicle with the Ethiopian motor registration Department.

To apply for a personalized registration plate, the appropriate application must be completed. Ethiopian motor registration Department has the right to limit or reject certain requests. Personalized registration plate applicants must have a valid registration plate, which the applicant shall retain pending receipt of the requested personalized registration plate. Restrictions apply and are found on each application.

Step II User letter or Numbers

Use capital letters or numbers. The letter O and the number zero are the same. The following are not acceptable: small letters, symbols, signs, hyphens, apostrophes, etc.

Carefully distinguish between

letters L or I and number 1, letter S and number 5,letter G and number 6, letter Z and number 2,letter B and number 8, letter U and letter V. A separate application must be submitted for each personalized registration plate. Fees vary and are listed on each application form.

Step III Meaning of wording.

Provide a meaning for your request, i.e. what does the letters or symbols represent? New vehicles must be titled and registered prior to a personalized plate being issued.

Step IV Registration procedure.

If the vehicle that you wish to register with personalized plates is already titled in your name, send:

• A copy of your Certificate of Registration or complete the vehicle description on the application.
• A $1500 personalized plate fee plus the annual registration fee if the current plates expire within the next 3 months for auto, truck or motor home plates

• Your license plate will not be reserved until EMRD receives your payment and completed application, and approves your requested license plate configuration [number(s) and/or letter(s)]
• A $300 personalized plate fee plus biennial registration fee if plates expire within the next 3 months for motorcycle or farm plates.

Step V payment.

Make check payment or cash or money order payable to: Ethiopian motor Registration department .

Note

Please note that personalized registration plate requests are processed vehicle on a first-come, first-served basis.

Although a requested personalized registration plate configuration may show as being available now, it is possible that a request for the same configuration may have already been submitted by another customer and may not be available when your application is received by the department of motor registration. In addition, under the Motor Vehicle Code, Motor registration department may refuse any combination of letters and numbers for cause.

A.Two (2) passport photographs of owner

B.Identification document of applicant

C.Shipping documents (customs card, bill of laden) in cases where the vehicle has been shipped into the country;

D.Attestation letter and purchase receipt (vehicles purchased brand new)

E.Payment receipts for Registration Fees, Number Plate, Vehicle License, Weighing and Registration.

1.Do not submit false documents or give false information;

2.To obtain any form of number plate, a vehicle must first be registered by the authorized authority;

3.An applicant is held responsible for any documents and information submitted in the due course of obtaining the number plate;

4.A minor may be represented by a mature person;

5.Applications should be made in an authorized centre for new number plates;

• Vehicle registration number;
• The vehicle engine number for the motor vehicle;
• Chassis number; and
• The current owner full names (as in the log book)

A personalized number plate is one that designed based on the owners desires. It is either in his / her name, any other persons name, name of company, a word, phrase, letter among others as it may be desired by the owner. In Ethiopia, personalized number plates are referred to as Out-of-Series number plates and like any other number plates, personalized number plates are issued by the Road Safety Commission in Ethiopia.
