1. To obtain a certified copy of a death certificate, go to your local vital statistics office.
2. You will need to complete and submit an application form. A link you can use to download the form is provided under 'Documents to Use' section.
3. Do not forget to bring a valid identification. The registry personnel will ask for your ID in order to confirm your identity and make sure that you have the right to obtain the certificate.
4. When you submit your request make sure that you have provided these important details which will make searching for the record easier:
   1. Name of the deceased
   2. Sex
   3. Date of death
5. Pay the state fee.
6. Your request will be processed immediately and the certificate will be issued on the same day. In cases where it is not possible, your certificate will be released no later than 5 days.

Online

1. You may also submit your request online via the information gateway Riigiportaal.
2. After logging in, you will need to choose: services/for a citizen/family/ordering the input of a vital statistics document. If you wish to receive the document from the Tallinn Vital Statistics Department, you will need to indicate as the place of receipt upon submitting the application and pay the state fee to the account of the Tallinn Vital Statistics Department.
3. Digitally sign your application and submit it for processing.
4. Your application shall be processed in a general queue without delay, but no sooner than within five working days.

You may use the link provided under "Office Locations & Contacts" section to get in touch with the nearest Embassy of Estonia in the country where you are currently staying. The Embassy's consular service section will be able to help process your request to obtain a copy of a death certificate.

Duplicates of a certificate may be issued in case of loss, theft or destruction. They may also be issued in case of deterioration.
