Apply In-Person:

1. To get carnage extract from notaries union, the applicant must approach the Ministry of Justice Contact link
2. Obtain the application form for appointment of notary public from the Governor General’s Office and complete it accordingly.
3. The fees for this procedure is free of cost.
4. Prepare the applicant two Certificates of Fitness to practice as a notary signed by two existing notaries or practicing Attorneys-at-Law of not less than 10 years standing and attach the certificates to the application.
5. Also, make sure that the applicant has all the documents listed in the “Required documents” section of this page.
6. Then visit the Governor General’s Office to submit the application.
7. At the Governor General’s office, the application will be verified by the responsible official and the application will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Justice.
8. The ministry of Justice will assess the application to determine if they meet the standard requirements to be a notary public and then they will refer the applicant application to the Chief Justice.
9. The Chief Justice will request a confidential report on the from the Society of Notaries Public.
10. Based on the report and assessment of the applicant application, if it is determined that the applicant is suitable to be a notary public, his/her name will be shortlisted for the position of the notary public and his/her name will be placed on a waiting list.
11. When the public requires the appointment of another notary or there is a vacancy for the position of a notary, a selection of the most suitable candidate for appointment will be made from the list depending on the date of application.
12. If the applicant is successfully appointed, the Minister of Justice will then cause the Write of medics and the applicant Commission will be prepared and sent to the Governor-General for signing.
13. Applicant will then be informed of the appointment in writing and the applicant will be taken through the due process of a notary public appointment.
14. The processing time for this procedure is 2 weeks.

• To notarize his/her documents, the applicant have to visit the notary or sub registrar office along with the above mentioned documents, the other party and at least 2 witnesses.
• The documents will be drafted and verified by the notary. The applicant will be asked to sign the papers and prove his/her identity using the applicant identity documents.

• As a publicly commissioned official, a notary is tasked with verifying the authenticity of documents, and they serve as impartial witnesses when signing legal documents. Legal documents are notarised to ensure that transactions are properly executed and to deter fraud.
• Notarized documents assure legal authenticity of a person's identity and signature whereas, without registering a sale agreement of a property a person cannot claim ownership of that particular property. Hence, notarization cannot be a substitute of registering an agreement.
