Apply In Person (both Citizen & Non – Citizen)

1. To apply for Single Status Certificate, the applicant has to approach the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – link
2. The applicant has to visit the office with the request affidavit letter.
3. An application form will be provided to the applicant by the concerned officer.
4. The applicant has to fill in all the necessary details in the application form. (Incomplete applications are not accepted)
5. Make sure that the applicant has attached all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
6. The applicant has to attach the photocopies of the required documents along with the application form while submitting.
7. Submit all the documents with the completed form to the concerned officer.
8. The applicant has to pay the fee as per the authority’s request.
9. After receiving the application, the concerned authority will check the submitted application and document set. #If all are in place, the application will be accepted.
10. Then the application will be processed further. All the updates on the application status will be sent via SMS.
11. The applicant will receive the certificate through mail.
12. This entire process can be completed within 2 - 4 weeks or as per the timeline advised by the respective department authority.

• If divorced, Decree Absolute.
• If widowed, Death Certificate of previous spouse (and Marriage Certificate).
• The relevant fee.

The certificate is also issued to everybody stating a legal interest.

If you have lived in different countries after the age of 18, it may be necessary to obtain a marital status certificate from each country.

Certificate of marital status: from the place you were born as well as from your present place of residence (if different). NB! Certificate of marital status can also be required from other places if necessary. The certificate must be no older than 4 months and must be translated if not issued in Danish, English or German. The certificate must include the following: Name, date of birth, place of birth, current address, citizenship and marital status.

The certificate is issued free of charge if at least one of the prospective spouses has a residence in Denmark. Otherwise the cost is DKK 500.

The documents must not be more than four months old.

The documentation must state your name, address for at least the past year, date of birth and current marital status.

Foreigners have no legal obligation to produce a Certificate of Marital Status (Single Status Certificate) (prvelsesattest) of the country of origin if they intend to marry in Denmark. In practice the presentation is considered as useful.

Certificate of marital status (no older than four months) from all the places you have been registered since you were old enough to get married as well as from your present place of residence (if different).

This certificate is confirmation that a person has met all marriage requirements according to Danish law and is valid for 4 months from issue. This certificate is issued by the mayor of the main or last place of residence.

This can be obtained from your local department of foreign affairs or your embassy in the country in which you are getting married.

Please note, that the most civil registries dont accept affidavits as certificates of marital status. A certificate from the local authorities or the county clerks office is necessary with the statement, that there is no marriage registered.

PROOF OF CURRENT RESIDENCE AND MARITAL STATUS

This document has many different names such as Declaration of Non-Impediment to Marry, Statutory Declaration of Single Status, Affidavit of Intended Marriage, Statement In-Lieu of Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage Abroad, Certificate de Coutume, a Certificate of No Impediment, Certificate of Nulla Osta, Certificate of Freedom to Marry or just free to marry.

A certificate of marital status of the home country is not necessary if:

• the person was divorced in the host country and is still living there.
• the person is living in the host country since under 18 (must be shown by a certificate).

Legalization (tripartite verification of the original document):

• The proper superior Ministry (usually the Ministry of Justice, in some countries the Ministry of the Interior) must legalize the person who has issued the divorce decree or death certificate (authentication of the signature and authority of the issuer of the original document (not copy of the original).
• The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must then legalize the person of the Ministry of Justice/Ministry of the Interior (mentioned above.) who has legalized the issuer the divorce decree or death certificate.
• The local Danish Embassy or consulate must then legalize the person of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (mentioned above.) who has legalized the person of the Ministry of Justice/Ministry of the Interior.

Apostille (single verification of the original document):

• If the papers are issued in countries in the Apostille Convention (www.hcch.net) it is sufficient to get a stamp on the original document from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (not copy of the original).
