A biometric passport is a travel document that contains an electronic "carrier" data. There is a chip hidden inside the passport in which the biometric data of the passport holder is stored.
A Croatian e-passport contains the biometric facial image and fingerprints (left and right index finger) of the passport holder.
Following are procedures on how to apply for a biometric passport.
The Biometric Passport
There is a chip placed within the multilayer structure of the data page of the passport, made of a specific polymer materials, polycarbonate. A silver logo can be found on the passport, indicating that the passport contains a chip.
The chip stores the passport holder's name, nationality, date of birth, gender, designation for the type of travel document. It also states the passport number, personal identification number, date of issue and date of expiry of the passport and the authority who issued the passport. These datas are the very same information printed on the passport.
The chip also contains the holder's biometric data: biometric facial image and fingerprints (left and right index finger).
All these datas are saved only in the memory chip, access to them is protected by an appropriate authentication mechanism. Informtion inside the chip can not be modified without the light detecting intent of counterfeiting. The basis of the protection of the passport is a digital certificate that ensures the authenticity of the document.
Lost Passport
A report regarding the lost of the passport must be filed immediately after the holder has become aware of the incident. The disappearance or finding travel documents must all be reported to the police department / station, if the passport disappeared or been found in Croatia; or to the nearest Croatian diplomatic mission or consular office, if the passport is lost or found abroad. After reporting the incident, the lost passport must be declared invalid (citizen must pay an administrative fee in the amount of 20.00 + 50.00) Decision declaring the passport invalid must be announced at the "Official Gazette" at the expense of the holder, after publication application to obtain an new one may now be submitted.
Biometric passports are introduced by the Croatian Government to comply with international security standards on travel documents, as an element of border security and travel.
This document provides higher level of protection to its holder against fraudulent misuse and unauthorized alteration. It also allow Croatian border officers to do quick checks on individuals entering the country using the biometric passport.
