Procedure

The birth of a child should be registered at a birth registry of the district in which it occurred. If the child was born before arrival at a hospital/clinic or the birth has not been registered within 1 year, the birth should be registered at the local Public Security Bureau.

Eligibility

Within a month of the birth the child must be registered with the local Public Security Bureau; this is a requirement for all births.

Instructions

If a baby is born to one foreign parent and one Chinese national parent, the baby automatically has Chinese citizenship.
A child born in China to two foreigners is not eligible for Chinese nationality.




Required Information

  • Name, gender and date and time of birth
  • Place of birth and gestational week of birth
  • Health status at birth, including length and weight
  • Mother's name, age, ethnicity and nationality
  • Mother's ID card number
  • Father's name, age, ethnicity and nationality
  • Father's ID card number
  • Location of birth (hospital, home etc.)
  • Name of the facility





Need for the Document

Under the relevant Ordinance, a birth will be registered upon receipt by the registrar of the relevant birth return (a document that records a baby's birth) from the hospital in which the baby is born.



Information which might help

A child will be recognised as a citizen of China only until the citizenship is formally given up. Unless one nationality is chosen for the child, it is very difficult to obtain a visa or permit from the Public Security Bureau and the child is not allowed to leave the country.
