Chile - Convert or Exchange Foreign Driver License


Procedure

  1. You should approach the local municipal offices for converting or exchanging your foreign driver license to Chilean driver license. Some municipalities accept the valid foreign driver license and some municipalities doesn't accept. Following are the list of municipalities that can be approached : Municipalities Office Locations
  2. Please make sure you have all the documents that are listed under Required Documents section of this page. If you don't have a "diploma or transcript providing you have at least an 8th grade education" document there will be a equivalence education test that will be provided which you have to clear which will be in Spanish.
  3. You would have to do a eye test and make sure you get a certificate for it.
  4. You would be asked to take a written test where all the regions in the country use the same question and answers. You can have a look of this question and answers in the following website : http://www.allchile.net
  5. Some municipalities might accept your foreign driver license to let you skip your written test.
  6. You would be asked to driver to make sure you have enough driving skills.

Instructions

  • You would be able to driver for one year in Chile with your foreign driver license.
  • But once you receive your Chilean permanent residence, you will have to get your Chilean driver license.
  • Chilean driver license is handled by the local municipality, the way exam is being handled will change between municipalities.
