Brazil - Exchange your Foreign Driver License


Procedure

  1. The license must be applied for by the individual in person or a Despachante representing the individual. (Despachante is the term used throughout Brazil for a professional who works in the area of vehicle documentation and registration on behalf of a vehicle owner.)
  2. These required documents must be presented at the Setor de Atendimento ao Estrangeiro (Service Area for Foreigners) of the local DETRAN office. (To find a local DETRAN office, please follow the link provided in the 'Office Locations and Contacts' section in this page.)
  3. The applicant may be required to take medical and psychological exams; this is decided by DETRAN on a case-by-case basis (for example, if the original foreign driving licence is close to expiring).


Required Documents

  • Original and copy of your countrys drivers license while still valid.
  • Original and copy of document that proves your legal entry and permanence in Brazil.
  • Translation of the Drivers License by a Sworn public translator or the countrys consulate.
  • Copy and original (for verification only) of address document issued within three months from the date of application (bank statement, electricity, gas or telephone bill, condominium bill, Real Estate Tax Bill ("IPTU"), rental agreement).

Eligibility

A full Brazilian driving licence can only be given to a foreigner who is legally resident in Brazil and who meets the Brazilian State Transport Department requirements.
