Instructions

[edit]

Important Information
COLLECTING INSECT SPECIMENS FOR IDENTIFICATION

  • Be very careful in collecting insect specimens or plant material connected with insect specimens.
  • Send along as much of the affected plants, trees, etc., connected with the insect pest as possible. If the insect is abundant, send more than one individual (up to 5)
  • Place insects in a container, then pack the container gently with a soft material such as cotton or layers of tissue paper/paper towel and then package in a squash‐proof container in such a way to keep damage to the insects to a minimum.
  • Soft‐bodied insects (grubs, caterpillars, mites) and spiders will lose their coloring very quickly after death. These should be sent in as quickly as possible.
  • Submit immediately after packing.

If large plant specimens are to be shipped with the insect pests:

  • Send as much of the plant as possible.
  • Explain where pests were found if separated from plant specimen.
  • Wrap plant roots or soil in plastic bag to prevent their drying out.
  • Put specimens inside a small, squash‐proof container (vial, Tupperware), then into a box or strong envelope with padding and/or packing material so that they will arrive in good shape.

Required Information

[edit]

  • Full name of the applicant
  • When the pest was first noticed
  • Where was it found (indoor, kind of plant, food)
