Botswana - Renew Health Professionals Registration


Procedure

Apply In Person

  1. The renewal period for Health Professionals Registration is from 1st April to 30th June of any given financial year, the application shall be made to the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) office, which is under the Ministry of Health and Awareness (MoH).   2. Applicants are required to collect and complete the Botswana Health Professions Council Renewal Form, obtainable at the BHPC office or download it via the MoH website, Regulatory Service or directly download it using this link, Botswana Health Professions Council Renewal Form
  3. If you have acquired an additional qualification or have changed your surname in the past twelve months please contact the office to collect and complete the relevant form.
  4. Submit the duly completed application form attached to the relevant supporting documents as mentioned under the “Required Documents” section of this page to the BHPC registry office.
  5. Upon receipt of the application file, the registrar will verify if all the necessary information and documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before registering the application file for assessment and consideration by the Botswana Health Professions Council committee board.
  6. Applicants are required to make payment of the renewal fee and obtain a BHPC payment receipt and acknowledgment slip, which shall serve as proof of submission of the application and for inquiry referencing if the need arises.
  7. The board may require an applicant to furnish them with additional information or evidence of eligibility for renewing of the registration as it may think fit and may summon the applicant, to appear personally before the board or subcommittee for an interview or a written test. In such a case, the information must be submitted within a reasonable time from the date of notification. Where the applicant fails to submit the required information or responded to the summon, the board shall reject the application.
  8. The Board shall approve the renewal of the registration certificate, where the applicant continues to meet the eligibility requirements and demonstrates the required standards of a Health Professional.
  9. Applicants are notified in writing about Board resolutions, regarding their applications.
  10. If approved, the registration certificate/ BHPC blue card shall be issued to the applicant, upon presenting their identity document, BHPC payment slip, and approved a letter to be validated by the BHPC registrar's office.
  11. Where the board is not satisfied that an applicant meets the registration requirements, it shall reject the application and notify the applicant in writing, stating the reasons for the rejection.

  • Certified copy of the registration certificate to be renewed.
  • Certified copy of passport details (non-citizens) or Omang (citizens).
  • Certified copy of a valid residence permit, or work permit or waiver (if applicable)
  • Certified evidence of change of name or surname [if applicable].
  • Certified copy of the certificate of qualifications (if applicable)
  • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Application letter (cover letter to application form)
  • Certified copy of Current Practicing License and Registration Certificate
  • Any other supporting documentation as required by the BHPC registry office.


Note: All documents must be in English and every document must be certified by the Commissioner of Oath

  • All health profession either in the public or private sector, who are registered with the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) are eligible to apply.

Validity

  • The validity of the registration certificate/Blue card is mentioned on the document, and it shall remain valid for that period unless suspended or revoked or cancelled by the BHPC.
  • Upon expiring the document is subject to renewal.

Need for the Document

  • All Health professionals are required to be registered and certified by the Botswana Health Professions Council (BHPC) which is a body under the Ministry of Health. The Registration certificate/blue card should be renewed upon expiring.
  • It is illegal to employ a health professional who is not registered with BHPC or who does not have a valid practicing certificate as stipulated by the Health Professions Act (Cap 61.02)

  • A Health Profession Registration Certificate shows that one has met the requirements to join the Health Profession under regulations by BHPC. Once granted, it does expire and should be renewed. The Registration Certificate alone does not allow one too lawfully to perform medical work, you also need a practicing Certificate.
  • The practicing certificate allows a person to lawfully execute the works of a health professional.
