Apply In-Person

1. The application to obtain a Recreational Fishing Licence or Permit shall be made to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), which is under the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism office.Ministry contact details.
2. Applicant should submit supporting documentation to the nearest DWNP Office, Licensing, and Registration unit.
3. Those who wish to fish at the camps/lodges should bring the letter from the camp and for the dams, they need the entrance permit from Water Utilities Corporation
4. Applicants who intend to stage a recreational fishing competition should submit the application file at least two months before the date of such competition/activity.
5. The DWNP Licensing and Registration officer will then verify if all the documentation has been provided and that the applications comply with the selection criteria before drawing up the Recreational Fishing Licence or Permit as directed by the Director, using the Recreational Fishing License form;Recreational Fishing License Form. TO BE COMPLETED BY THE DWNP LICENSING OFFICER.
6. The license /permit will be affixed with the DWNP stamp in red ink on top of the Directors/Authorized official signature before being issued to the applicant.
7. The applicant will be required to produce a proof of identity document and pay the prescribed license fee as mentioned under the “Fees” section of this page while collecting the Recreational Fishing License.
8. The permit/license shall be subject to such terms and conditions as the Director deems fit to impose in each case, and such terms and conditions or requirements shall be endorsed on the permit.

Appeals to the Minister

• Any person who is aggrieved by the refusal of the Director to grant a permit, or by any terms imposed by the Director to grant a permit, may appeal against the refusal or the terms and conditions to the Minister within 30 day

• Letter from the Lodge/camp
• A permit from Water Utilities Corporation (where applicable)

Recreational fishing shall be done-

• Using a single fishing rod, line or hook.
• Any person engaging in recreational fishing shall catch and keep more than five fish in one day.
• Any person engaging in recreational fishing shall release juvenile or undersized fish when caught.

• The Recreational Fishing license/permit is granted to those who wish to fish for recreational/sports purposes. In Botswana, open fishing season is between March 1st and December 31st annually. Fishing is allowed in all water bodies.
