1. The application for a duplicate driver's license/permit shall be made to the Regional Department of Road Transport and Safety Office. Department of Road Transport and Safety Offices (DRTS) Office Location & Contact Details Link
2. To obtain a replacement for a lost or destroyed driver's license/permit, the applicant should report the incident to the nearest police post administration within 24 hours and receive a Statement/Affidavit from the police stating how the license got lost or damaged.
3. Collect the Application for a Botswana Driving Licence/Permit Form obtained at the Registration and licensing section at the nearest DRTS office or directly download it using this link: Application for a Botswana Driving Licence/Permit Form
4. Applicants  65 years or older or applying for a class C, C1, EC, or EC1 license should download and complete Health Declaration form (DL31). Valid for 30 days.
5. Complete the application forms accurately and attach all the supporting documentation as listed under the “Required Documents” section below; to the Registration and licensing section at the nearest DRTS office for processing and consideration. Any omission of the required documents or information will render the application process incomplete.
6. On submission of the application file, the receiving officer will check for discrepancies or ineligibility in the application documents. If a discrepancy that cannot be immediately corrected exists in any of the documents, the application and all the submitted documents will be returned to the applicant and should not be re-submitted until the discrepancy has been rectified.
7. Applicants will then be required to go to the eye screening office for an eye examination. In the case of applicants with eyesight challenges, the Registration and Licensing Officer at the Regional Department of Road Transport and Safety office would refer them to be seen by an external eye specialist for further testing.
8. Only after the external eye specialist recommends that the driving license application process will commence should the applicants return to the Registration and Licensing Officer with the results and recommendations.
9. Applicants will be advised to pay for the Duplicate Driver's License Or Permit at the DRTS cash counter and obtain a payment receipt.
10. Present the payment receipt to the Registration and Licensing Officer and have your photo taken. After the photo is taken, sign on the signature pad, and collect your printed driving license against your identity document.

  • Certified copy of National Identify Card (Omang)
  • Certified copy of Passport
  • Certified copy of Exemption certificate or Residence and Work Permit
  • Refugee Identification Card (Refugees)
• 2 passport-sized photos
• Affidavit/Statement from the police detailing the reason why the license was damaged or lost.
• The copy of the Lost Licence (if it is available).
• Any additional supporting documentation may be requested by the Authority.

• The driving license is issued as an authority to allow a person to drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road in Botswana, in the case where the license has been stolen, lost, or damaged the holder of the license should apply for a duplicate.
• No person is allowed to drive a motor vehicle on road in Botswana unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a provisional license endorsed in respect of that class of vehicle.
• Any person driving a motor vehicle on a road is required by law to carry his driving license or provisional license, and on being so required by a police officer, produce it for examination.
• The driving license shows compliance with Botswana traffic laws regarding driving.
