Apply In-Person

1. To obtain a Convert Foreign Pilot Licence (CFPL), the applicant should visit the CIVIL AVIATION AUTHORITY OF BOTSWANA {CAAB) head office to apply. Please view the CAAB contact details via this Link
2. Applicants are required to complete and submit the prescribed APPLICATION FOR CONVERT FOREIGN PILOT LICENCE form CA 61-02.9. Forms are available for free at any of the CAAB offices.
3. The completed application file is to be submitted to the CAAB head office, for consideration, only if the applicant is a holder of a valid medical certificate or after ascertaining that your medical assessment has been assessed as “fit” by the Civil Aviation Medical Board (CAMB). This will be certified in the appropriate section of the application form.
4. The CAAB registration and licensing receiving officer will verify if all the required documents and information have been provided, and if the application is compliant if everything is in order, the application file will be registered, upon paying the prescribed fee, as mentioned under the “FEE” section of this page.
5. Applicants will then be issued with an acknowledgment letter, containing details of the application.
6. The application file will be assessed and processed by the registration and licensing unit, based on the information and documents that have been provided and if complying;
7. Applicants will then be required to book and take Botswana Air law Examinations (theory and flight test) with an appropriately approve Botswana Delegated Examiner.
8. Having successful passing the Botswana Air law Examinations, the CAAB registration, and licensing unit, will then establish the authenticity and validity of the foreign pilot license, by contacting the authority that issued the license, if satisfied with the outcome;
9. The application is approved and you will be notified when the license is ready for collection by phone or mail.
10. Proceed to the CAAB registration and license office and present the acknowledgment letter and identity document to be validated by the licensing office and have your photo taken, after the photo is taken, sign on the signature pad/book and collect your printed converted pilot license at the dispatch office against your identity document.

• A knowledge test report and/or skill test report conducted by a CAAB Designated Pilot Examiner
• Personal logbooks or other records substantiating the flight experience shown on the Application form
• A photocopy of the applicant’s logbook
• Two (2) color passport size recent photographs (full face)
• Valid identity document (passport)
• Payment receipt of the prescribed fees
• Any other additional documents requested for be the CAAB

Where the applicant holds a private pilot license the following shall apply:

• The foreign license must be of validity of up to six months
• Any limitation on the foreign license will apply as appropriate
• The license will authorize the applicant to fly only the aircraft types physically endorsed on the foreign license/logbook and which on the Botswana Aircraft Register
• The applicant shall undergo a skill test conducted by a CAAB Designated Pilot Examiner
• The applicant shall include evidence of language proficiency in the English Language with the language proficiency of at least level 4
• The applicant shall provide evidence of appropriate flight hours
• The applicant must hold a valid medical certificate issued by a CAAB Designated Medical Examiner
  

Where the applicant holds a commercial pilot license and airline transport pilot license the following shall apply:

• The applicant must hold a current validation certificate
• The applicant must have completed 500 flight hours in Botswana registered aircraft which are operated by an operator established in Botswana exercising privileges granted by the validation certificate
• Must presents to the Authority the foreign license and evidence of the 500 flight hours by presenting record such as the logbook
• The applicant must hold a valid medical certificate issued by a CAAB Designated Medical Examiner

• The validity of the converted pilot license will be indicated on the license

• A pilot who has a foreign pilots’ license and wishes to fly in Botswana on a long-term basis is required to convert their foreign pilot license for a Botswana pilot license.
